Very impressed with the beauty of this chopper! Bought this for a gift but will most likely be purchasing one for our kitchen as well. Thankful to have craftsmanship like this as well as the "made in the US" appeal. Thank you!

A few words about my philosophy and working methods:

All my knives and tools are individually handmade in my home shop here in southern New Mexico. Steel blades are formed in a charcoal-fired forge using hammer and anvil, then carefully heat-treated, sharpened, and tested before shipping. I have been making tools for about twenty years now, with a focus on historical hand tools...my goal is to produce finely functioning, attractive and comfortable tools, which will also last a lifetime with proper care.

I use primarily recycled, locally sourced materials in my work. All blades are made from recycled high-carbon steels, often old files, chisels, and vehicle springs. I particularly enjoy using antique materials, such as parts from horse drawn wagons...these materials often have a workability and organic appearance that modern steels (in my opinion) can't match.

Unlike the stainless steels many of us are used to nowadays, carbon steels can rust if not maintained...for best results dry after washing, and keep blade and handle lightly oiled (any oil used for cooking will work well). After some use, carbon steel blades will typically develop some grayish patina...this does not affect the function of the tool, and can be kept to a minimum by cleaning with a lightly abrasive scrubber, such as a scotch-brite pad.

Woods and other materials collected locally are carefully selected for their appearance, grain, and working qualities; I generally cut wood from dead, standing trees if possible. Some of my favorite woods include Mesquite, Walnut, Hackberry, and Osage Orange. Many of my kitchen knives are handled in Desertwillow (Chilopsis linearis), a little-known desert tree related to catalpa; this wood is incredibly resistant to water damage, which makes it great for use in the kitchen. Leftover wood scraps become forge fuel, enabling me to make efficient use of material that might otherwise go to waste.

All wood finishes used are all-natural and non-toxic...I most commonly use a homemade blend of beeswax and cooking oil.

Each order is carefully packed in recycled newspapers, in a shipping container fabricated from recycled cardboard. Worldwide shipping is included in the purchase price on all orders; shipping will be by US Postal Service.

I am also proud to have appeared in "Handmade Portraits" on etsy's blog! Watch the video here: http://www.etsy.com/storque/read/handmade-portraits-old-school-tools-9516/
