Czech glass beads, both vintage and contemporary*. Trade beads and tribal beads dating back thousands of years, many excavated from African soil. Micro-faceted crystals and designer cuts, along with big lush 'Hollywood' jewel cut crystals. Natural shell, bone, wood, myrrh and seeds. Metal beads, caps, spacers and clasps. Premium glass pearls that look and feel like the real thing in a rainbow of colors and shapes. A great selection of cultured sea glass. BE SURE TO CHECK THE NEW SECTION FOR BRAND NEW LISTINGS & ITEMS JUST BACK IN STOCK!!!

*If items are vintage, I always try to mark them as such. My vintage Czech glass is 'new old stock' meaning that it has never been purchased before, most likely from decades old shop inventory. If a listing is not marked 'vintage', it is most likely new/contemporary.

About

Old World Beads

Recently relocated to the Great Midwest from the wildly beautiful Oregon Coast. My daughter and I spent many years living in a gypsy's thimble.

gypsy's thimble (thimbal) n. Middle English. An incredibly tiny seaside cottage surrounded by wild, untamed gardens, miles of blackberry thickets, which must be subdued on an almost daily basis; a full allotment of mischievous brownies and water fairies; giant roaming bunnies with a few personality quirks, a cat named Parker Campbell-Cat-About-Town, who strongly believes he should be allowed to drive; a chihuahua named Electra, who channels a most definite flower child mentality; a passionately loved family of other dogs, cats and human folk; and last but not least, mother and child who believe they are the luckiest people in the world to be living together in the most magical, beautiful place on earth.

It's been 23 years since I started buying old broken jewelry at yard sales and secondhand stores, using the beads to make my own designs. Prior to the Internet and the current international beading frenzy, you were lucky to have access to one decent bead shop. How things have changed! I had no idea where those first broken strands of faux pearls would lead.

I started designing & creating jewelry and amulet pouches in 1990. One small local gallery lead to many more, and soon I had my work in galleries and boutiques around the country. My work has been in international invitation-only shows, and juried shows. The biggest thrill was being honored with a one-woman gallery show (with champagne reception!)

But all of this took a tremendous amount of energy and stamina. Health issues became a major factor and it was necessary to bring everything back to home base and simplify.
Recently, I had to move to the Midwest, to help my elderly mother. I could not leave her alone for hours at a time, so I needed a way to make money from home. I kept thinking about that little electric thrill of getting new beads in the mail, and how it never grows old...I knew that everyone in the "beading sisterhood" probably felt the same way...impatiently waiting for the postman! Wanting to be a part of that "Christmas-y feeling" inspired me to open my bead shop on Etsy, and that is how Old World Beads was born.

I have met so many lovely people and I have made some wonderful friends. Having a true need to purchase bunches of beads isn't half bad either! I just love it when someone decides to buy some of my favorite beads... I really enjoy wrapping up the orders and shipping them out...knowing that my customers have beautiful new beads on the way!
