Inspired by the original Olive, my fashionista grandmother

All of Olive Designs' creations are imbued with the spirit of my grandmother, Olive (she's the one in the hat in the picture), who passed on her love of hats, fascinators and hair accessories to me when I was just a wee girl. One of the first hats I can remember wearing was a jaunty red beret that Olive gave me when I was around 6. It matched one that she had and I thought I was so grown up in my stylish hat. Although Olive is no longer with us, I like to think that her spirit lives on in every Olive Designs creation.

About three years ago, I decided that I wanted to make hats like the ones Olive once owned and so I became a student at George Brown College's Arts and Design Fashion program, where I learned traditional millinery techniques, including pattern-making, sewing, constructing three-dimensional forms, blocking and embellishment. Learning the art of millinery and all of the work and detail that goes into it was a life-changing experience, and a new outlet for my creativity. And so, Olive Designs was born.

My creative process is pretty organic. When I'm designing a hat, fascinator or clip, I typically start with a vague concept, something that's been playing around in my head and go from there. My inspiration often comes from a colour, a vintage design that I've seen or a fabric that I'm obsessed with. There's lots of playing around with different colours and materials, trying something here, adding something there until I'm happy with what I've come up with.
