Unique handmade & illustrated custom ceramics from Kent

Sevenoaks, United Kingdom | 224 Sales

Announcement    Some space now for custom orders, do drop me a message with any queries.

Happy to deliver free locally (Sevenoaks etc) or local customers who wish to collect their work from me.

I use tracked shipping throughout the world for complete peace of mind.

Beautiful handmade ceramic pottery gifts for dog lovers and collectors of unique studio ceramics. Ceramic vases, ceramic pitchers and jugs, ceramic platters and bowls, miniature ceramic sculptures. Because I decorate each piece by hand and then high-temperature glaze, the designs will never fade (unlike many ceramics which are produced using transfers applied over the glaze and fired to a low temperature).

From a simple mug to the most decorative vase my ceramics are all one-offs. Each piece has been hand-crafted by me in Kent, England and decorated to create beautiful, useable pottery.

Commission beautiful handmade ceramic pottery gifts by Simon Olley

I love making pottery, all my work is totally one-off, thrown on my pottery wheel, then designed and illustrated by hand, no transfers or anything similar is used, every single piece is an original piece of art. I like to experiment and draw new things, but I work by myself so if something catches your eye it's definitely best to grab it before it goes (story of life actually), I may not be making anything similar for a while. Much of my work is inspired by my dog, Uly, but I also love illustrating fish, flowers and the countryside. I live at the foot of the North Downs, just below the Pilgrim's Way in the Kent countryside. Henry the Eighth's houses of Hever Castle (Ann Boleyn's childhood home) and Knole are nearby, and I'm not that far from Sissinghurst (Vita Sackville-West's former home with its famous White Garden).

ABOUT SIMON AND OLLEY POTTERY
Simon Olley threw his first pot aged 9. He has worked for some years in London successfully as a designer and illustrator. He now devotes his skills to making unique ceramics from his home studio in Kent, England.

The ceramics he throws on his pottery wheel are made using a variety of earthenware, stoneware and porcelain clays. He then decorates the clay, usually at leatherhard stage (damp but not soft), with a combination of slips, oxides and glazes. He may scratch into the surface with a range of small tools – a technique called sgraffito. The work is fired at least twice inthe kiln. The final stage is the pottery being given an all over clear glaze and fired in his kiln at temperatures between 1100 and 1300 degrees centigrade – all of the decoration is fixed under glaze so cannot be washed off or eroded (as ceramic transfers can be). The result is original, impervious works of craftsmanship – heirlooms that could last for thousands of years.

All designs are the original work of Simon Olley and are his copyright. All pottery is handmade and decorated by Olley Pottery in Kent, England.

Ceramics are sent with trackable worldwide delivery for complete peace of mind.

Frequently asked questions
Wholesale availability

All of my pieces are handmade and decorated as one-offs, for this reason, wholesale is not something I am really able to do. Why not consider purchasing a one-off ceramic as a display piece?

Sizing details

I try to be accurate about sizing but as everything is handmade there is some inevitable variation in sizing. If the size of an item is crucial, please check with me before ordering.

Delivery to USA

Most of the work I send to USA is relatively small (mugs, jugs, vases) and I am able to use UPS or UK Royal Mail's excellent Tracked and Signed service.

Shortly after dispatch, you will receive a tracking number, this allows you to follow the journey of your pottery via UPS or the Royal Mail website. Once your parcel arrives in your country it transfers to your national delivery service and the Royal Mail website continues to track your parcel's journey.

Delivery time depends on where you live, to USA is sometimes taking as little 5 working days (Royal Mail quotes between 5 and 7 working days, but is dependant on variables such as customs and time of year).

Any queries at any stage of the delivery process please contact me.

Delivery to Europe, Asia, Australasia and beyond

Most of the work I send abroad I use UPS tracked or the UK Royal Mail's insured Tracked and Signed service.

Shortly after dispatch, you will receive a tracking number, this allows you to follow the journey of your pottery via UPS or the Royal Mail website. Once your parcel arrives in your country it transfers to your national delivery service and the Royal Mail website continues to track your parcel's journey to your door.

Delivery time depends on where you live, Royal Mail quotes between 5 and 7 working days for many countries but is subject to variables such as customs.

Any queries at any stage of the delivery process don't hesitate to contact me.

Delivery of large items

For large ceramic items abroad (such as a large platter), I shop for the best shipping available at the time, I ensure my work is very securely packed before shipment. Please contact me for shipping of large items so I can get a quote. I refund to the customer any shipping overs.

Relocated or moving?

Please ensure you are using the correct address for your order, especially if you or the recipient has moved or relocated recently. Please do double-check the delivery address you are giving!

Local customers wishing to collect their pottery

Local customers who wish to collect their work directly from me, please contact me to arrange a suitable time. Alternatively I am usually able to deliver locally.

Delivery in person

Very locally (within Sevenoaks area) I'm more than happy to drop off completed work if you or the recipient is for example, housebound or does not have transport.

Gift wrapping and packaging

My gift wrapping is pretty basic. My emphasis is always on delivering my work safely and securely and this means strong and functional packaging. If you select gift packaging there will not be a priced-up invoice in the package, though if it is a delivery to the States or other country by UPS it may need to have an invoice both inside and attached outside for customs clearance. I do include an attractive Olley Pottery postcard with all my work and I am more than happy to write on this a handwritten message for the recipient, just let me know when you make your order or send me a message shortly after.

Is your work Corona Virus safe?

All my work is sanitised before packing and delivery. Packing materials are virgin-quality or sanitised before use. Obviously where delivery is involved we rely on the providers (Royal Mail, USPS, UPS etc) to use the same precautions as they do with all mail order items. Signatures are not collected at the moment, packages are delivered to a suitable safe location (porch etc) and usually photographed as proof of delivery. The greatest care is taken with all work and deliveries.
