Even more beautiful in person!
Transporting the viewer via watercolor and imagination…
My fascination with watercolor began in high school. I was inspired by a fellow student with a most unique watercolor style. I think I learned more from Rodney than I did from the teacher. Over the years I’ve ventured into other media but always come back to watercolor. Curiously, the inherent qualities that most people shy away from are the same ones that I find exciting. Watercolor has a mind of its own. The fluidity, intensity of the colors and the way they mix (sometimes unexpectedly) are what I find most exciting.
Living in San Diego I'm constantly inspired by the sea and for quite some time most of my work reflected my love of the ocean. More recently I have branched out—no pun intended— and have been exploring trees and other aspects of the landscape. The sky is also a big kick-starter for painting ideas and I can get tremendous inspiration from colorful skies and ever-changing clouds.
Over the years I've studied with such artists as Thomas W. Schaller, Jeanne Dobie, Tom Lynch and Richard Nelson, among others, but my current mentor is Nita Engle. My current work continues to evolve and I'm most satisfied by just letting go and not trying to control so much of my work. As anyone who has painted in watercolor knows, sometimes the "happy accidents" or things you could not plan are the best parts of the process. I love to experiment and find I discover new things every time I pick up my brushes. My goal in painting is to transport the viewer to another place—whether it is a real or familiar place or one from my imagination—if I've done that then I have passed on some of my passion for the magic that is watercolor.
Thank you for visiting…I hope you find something that transports YOU.

I have a Custom Order button in my shop but I have to explain that I don't normally do commissions because I have to love what I am painting. However, if you have a photo that you would like to have done in watercolor I will be happy to take a look and if it fits the bill we can discuss. As for other custom orders such as sizes different than listed, please contact me. I am happy to accommodate if I can. :)
