Frequently asked questions

Is my wooden item food safe?

This question has become more complicated. We use finishing products that we also use in our own home, but the manufacturers of the wood finishes are no longer saying 'food safe' because of legal issues. Generally finishes are inert once they've cured, but manufacturers are concerned that they won't know what or how long things will be stored in the wooden bowls/items, so they will not guarantee 'food safe'. Just as an example, the varnish we use for many of our glossy finish bowls was renamed recently from 'Salad Bowl Finish' to 'Wood Bowl Finish' to reflect this shift in the industry. We do use our own bowls in our home and feel that they are safe for our family.

Is my fused glass item food safe?

Glass chemistry is complicated, and sometimes glass manufacturers use metals to achieve the gorgeous colors you see. Glass manufactures have their glass tested to make sure that these metals don't leach out into foods. Once you melt the glass in your kiln however, their guarantees no longer apply.

I follow best practices by capping colored glass, mica, and enamels with clear or clear powder when the design of the piece allows it, but we do not have each piece of glass tested.

The iridescent and luminescent coatings, enamels, and decals I use are non-toxic.

We use my glass items in our own home for food, but legally we cannot say they are food safe without having them individually tested.
