"Bobbis" and Other Joys

I suppose the origins of One Shorn Sheep go back to 1997, when my grandmother asked if I would like to help her create a knit blanket for my baby cousin. A precocious and crafty kid, I eagerly jumped at the opportunity to learn knitting. As much as I recall enjoying the project, I would be lying if I told you that I helped a whole lot with it (I'd bet Grammy knit about 30 rows for every one of mine). Gradually, however, the blanket that my cousin came to affectionately call "Bobbis" was born.

She took the dang thing everywhere. To the mall, to the grocery store, in the car, on the plane... It got to the point where a much smaller version was also created to make for simpler portability. Watching her love that blanket until it was a stringy rag was one of the highlights of my childhood, and it was then that I discovered my love for creating things that put a smile on the faces of others.

Fast forward several years. I began using knitting during my undergraduate years as a way to relieve the stress of reading Chaucer and researching psychopathology. The act of clicking needles together was mindless enough to clear my head and therapeutic in the sense that I could still tell I was producing something during my down-time. A number of friends and roommates told me during these years that I should start putting some of my creations up on Etsy, a sentiment which I always met with a smile and the secret thought that I'd never have enough time for that during college.

Which is of course why I decided to take their advice during grad school.

At its core, I wanted One Shorn Sheep to be a store where every item could bring a smile to someone's face the way "Bobbis" brought so much joy to my cousin. There is something so addicting about watching people enjoy the small things in life, and if I can be a part of even a glimpse of that, I have done my job. At the moment, I'm working on transitioning into making all of my items from fair trade materials because I believe that the artisans who create the yarn should be in on this joy as well.

In coming years, I hope there is much to add to this story. I hope I have many more smiles and "Bobbises" to report. And I hope that the beginning of chapters to come can start with you.
