About

Video summary: Artist at Work: Painter/record producer Charlie Peacock (Charles W. Ashworth). Nashville, TN

Only In Nashville - The Record Producer Who Paints

The Grammy Award-winning record producer, Charlie Peacock, was born Charles William Ashworth in Yuba City, California. His father was a trumpeter, his mother a wordsmith. Charlie signs his paintings and prints CWA to honor his Ashworth family heritage. The Ashworths of southern Louisiana are often referred to as Redbones. They are included in many history and sociology books related to race in Louisiana and the settling of the Republic of Texas. CWA and his family have lived in Nashville, TN for thirty years. His wife is the writer, Andi Ashworth, and the two share a blog titled The Writer & The Husband (TheWriterTheHusband.com). Charlie and Andi are the parents of two grown children and Honey and Papa to four grandchildren.

In 1999, Charlie was named by Billboard's Encyclopedia of Record Producers as one of the 500 most important record producers in music history. As an artist, songwriter, producer, and music publisher, his list of credits spans four decades, and include such contemporary artists as The Civil Wars, Switchfoot, Chris Cornell, The Lone Bellow and the modern hymn writers Keith and Kristyn Getty. Charlie is a (4x) Grammy-award recipient (Folk, Country, Rock Gospel) and (3x) recipient of Gospel Music Association's Dove Award for Producer of the Year. An accomplished pianist, Charlie’s 3rd jazz CD, Lemonade, solo piano improvisations, reached #4 on Billboard Jazz Chart and #1 on iTunes Jazz Chart. His best known vocal songs include: “The One That Got Away,” “Every Heartbeat,” “In The Light,” “Down In The Lowlands,” “Say The Name,” and “Hands and Feet.” Television and film soundtrack credits include TURN: Washington’s Spies, Nashville, Parenthood, Grey’s Anatomy, A Walk to Remember, Something Borrowed and 12 Years a Slave.

In 2014, Charlie founded the Contemporary Music program in the School of Music at Lipscomb University in Nashville. In 2015 he assumed the role of Artist-In-Residence and Director of the new program. The following year he was named the Director of the School of Music. He served through the Spring semester of 2017. When he's not painting in acrylics, Charlie is composing and producing for a Facebook music initiative. In 2019, he co-founded the blog, TheWriterTheHusband.com

What is Gicleé and how do you pronounce it?

It is pronounced as Zee-Clay. Gicleé is fine resolution, art/archival quality ink-jet printing. With Gicleé prints, artists and photographers have new choices like canvas and fine art papers for reproducing their images.

What about custom sizes?

Contact OnlyInNashville and let us know what you are looking for. We will be able to tell you very quickly if it is possible or not. But do ask if you need a unique size print.

What is Charlie's artistic philosophy?

Charlie: "I'm about painting narratives as well as abstracts. I like to have lots of visceral interaction with the canvas, mediums, and paint (see video). The work has to be emotive, evocative, interesting to me as I'm creating. I'm not a purist. I will do whatever it takes to get the feeling and effect I'm reaching for. Everything begins with acrylics and canvas. But I have no problem with taking hi-resolution scans of my art, and creating post-production digital art using my painting as the starting place for new hues, tints & shading. This is why I offer multiple options on my Gliceé prints. It's more fun and offers collectors more colors to choose from."

Will Charlie work with designers on custom orders, particularly colors?

Charlie: "I'm very happy to work with designers on creating custom prints of my work, including sizes, additional color palettes (right for their client), and helping with framing via Bennett Galleries here in Nashville."
