Announcement   Stylish and practical accessories, handmade in Seattle, WA.

A portion of all sales helps to provide personal care kits (basic toiletries) for men and women transitioning from prison to employment. Your purchase from OpportunityKnits can make a real difference to someone who has "done their time" and is ready to get his or her life on track. It starts with a job, and getting a job means looking and feeling prepared and professional.

OpportunityKnits accessories are made with great care from original designs. I work with a variety of yarns, including wool, mohair, alpaca, cotton and fiber blends.

All items handmade by me in my pet-friendly home. No cats allowed in the studio!

About

Stitching for Social Change

My shop and my product were inspired by a pair of fleece-lined fingerless mittens and my desire to link design and handcrafts to commerce that would drive social change.

My armwarmer design is the result of lots and lots of prototypes, starting with handknit pieces made from my yarn stash, a not-very-good pair of scissors, and my ancient Singer sewing machine. I've since graduated to a knitting machine (which still requires lots of elbow grease!) and a new sewing machine more up to the task.

My vision is to open a small workshop where I can hire women who are transitioning from prison back to community and family. Re-entry is difficult at best, and employment is key to success.

For now, I'm focusing on Etsy and craft show sales and donating a portion of my proceeds to programs that support women in transition. The spring will find me thinking about a business plan and financing. If I can help even one woman get back on her feet - never to return to prison again - it will make all the dropped stitches, crooked seams, unexpected knots in yarn and broken needles worthwhile.
