Forging beautiful wood creations to help people.

Five years ago, I would never have thought I'd do something like this. I usually work in information security, but I have my supervisor, Mark, to thank for encouraging me to find a hobby unrelated to my day job.

It was around Veterans Day and the local Woodcraft store was sponsoring a "Turn a Pen for the Troops" event. I'd worked with lathes in high school, so I took my teenage son to participate in honoring veterans by making pens together. We turned about 4 pens that afternoon and wrote notes to the troops who would receive them, thanking them for their service. Turning those pens provided something special to those who work hard for our freedom. It made me think of my dad, an Army veteran who had recently been diagnosed with ALS, and how he always liked wooden pens. So, I decided to make pens for Dad and other family members.

I started with a small Rikon mini-lathe, some high-speed steel lathe tools, beautiful wood grain blanks, and pen kits. Over the course of three weeks and many wood blanks, I successfully created for my dad a Burmese Teak pen that was large enough for his failing grip strength to hold onto. He was overjoyed with the hand-made pen and proud of me for trying something new. Even though it was harder than I expected, it was ultimately satisfying to present a unique gift to someone so special to me.

Since then I’ve made many pens for gifts and was asked to start a shop and sell my creations so others can give them as gifts. As my operation has expanded, I’ve turned handles for measuring cups and spoons, crochet hooks for people with arthritis, seam rippers, bottle stoppers, and all sorts of custom pens. Each item in my Etsy shop is individually crafted using the best woods and careful attention to detail. If you are looking for hand-turned products but do not see what you're looking for, contact me at info [!at] orcawoodforge.com and we'll see what we can do to help!

I don't do this every day and fully intend for this to be anything but a full-time gig. I work on things when I can on weekends and will do my best to get everything done within two weeks of ordering.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you'll enjoy my wood creations!
