About

The Azorean Scrimshaw by Ricardo Machado (AZORES, PORTUGAL):

About my Art: Due to ecological issues and the conservation of wildlife I stopped doing the scrimshaw technique on whale's tooth and I have started to recreate this craft technique in the field of plastic arts using different materials (scrimshaw on canvas or wood). The canvas is prepared with the application of high quality plaster and then its surface is carved and finished with black india ink or/and watercolor. Due to inks used and paint on the easel , the inks oozes through the surface and creates extraordinary patterns. I proudly could say that i keep this rare craft technique alive.

It is a long and meticulous work that could be executed for longer than a month.

About scrimshaw: The scrimshaw technique previously developed by whalers, many of them Azoreans and Americans that in their small whaling boats in the mixture of fear and anxiety by waiting the appearance of the whale they engraved the ivory with the tips of their knives, where would be born the image of a life dedicated to the sea, hoping to survive and earning the barely enough to feed their families. This technique was later developed by artisans and is now recreated in the field of plastic arts by the Azorean Ricardo Machado.
