Help Us Defeat MSA By Purchasing An Original Work by Hess. Donated Art Collection: Whimsical and Storied Miniatures By EE HESS!

    About The Artist:
    E. E. HESS (June 18, 1926 – October 4, 2014)
Ernest Emil Hess never trained in art, never had an art show and never sold any pieces. He passed away in 2014 of cancer at the age of 88 years. Except for his early childhood in Hoboken, New Jersey and a short Navy stint in Panama during World War II, Hess spent most of his life in Detroit, starting with work at his father's downtown streetcar cafe and later as a butcher, factory worker and a day laborer. He helped his dad build the family home, from the ground up. He attended Catholic schools in Detroit and was a devoted parishioner at Assumption Grotto, also in Detroit.

For some time, Hess was a virtual recluse, spending countless days, weeks and months in his small cramped apartment on his varied artistic endeavors. He was an avid reader and many of his art pieces contain elements from vintage magazines such as the New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Variety and National Geographic. But always in these pop culture collages, his aim was to meld disparate images into a seamless unity, so much so that he painstakingly recreated many versions of the same piece.

In addition to his collages, Hess produced numerous oil paintings, on a wide variety of themes, including large female nudes, geometric shapes and on other abstract subjects. He churned out sculptures using metal and wood, fine line sketches and hundreds of playful miniatures. Many of his miniatures are set within leisure and athletic situations, which are also integral to the story within each scene. Several miniatures also depict historical figures, popular culture and famous events.

Hess never married nor had any children. His last wish was for the general public to come to know his art by donating his art to a worthy cause.
