Announcement   My yarns and rovings are handpainted with non-toxic dyes. The colors are inspired by the vivid tidepool creatures and lush scenery of the Oregon Coast. I do my dyeing in a cozy beach cabin where I can watch the waves crash over the rocks and listen to the rain coming down. I dry the skeins by the warmth of the woodstove or summer sun. I hope that you enjoy crafting this yarn into something special for yourself or a loved one.

Since I use natural fibers and food-safe dyes, my yarns and fiber are perfect for use in Waldorf dolls and toys.

You can find me on Facebook for updates and coupons.

About

How do you combine a love of yarn and marine biology?

One night at the beach my brain was doing that wild free-association thing that it does when I can't sleep. I started thinking about two of my favorite things: tidepool creatures and yarn. Sometimes I think I like yarn more than I like knitting. (So many pretty colors, and fun to pet.) I started thinking about how many eye-catching colors and gorgeous combinations can be found on things like anemones, chitons and urchins. I knew nothing about dyeing, but I found some great books and learned by doing. I chose to use food-safe dyes because I have neither the $$ nor space to have a whole extra set of bowls, measuring spoons, pots, etc. for dyeing. I've really enjoyed planning out new colorways and also the happy accidents that come when things don't go according to plan. Pretty soon I had a good stash of yarn dyed and wanted to share it with others. Oystercatcher Yarns was born. Oystercatchers are noisy, crazy-looking birds that patrol intertidal areas in search of tasty limpets and snails.

Recently, I've gotten into dyeing wool roving for needle-felting and have dyed some of my own felted items like bracelets and bowls. Expect more of these in the future.

I am a 5th-generation Oregonian who loves all the beauty and cool creatures that this state has to offer. The beach has always been my favorite getaway, and now it's my inspiration as well. Turns out this science person has a little creativity too.

Oystercatcher Yarns is the result of a bout of insomnia during which I had the crazy idea to combine two of my two favorite things: yarn and marine biology. I wanted to bring the bright colors of Oregon's tidepools into the natural fiber yarns that I love to knit with. As I read up on dyeing, I quickly realized that I wanted to stick with food-safe dyes. I dye each skein individually, so no two are alike. I hope you'll enjoy knitting and wearing them as much as I did designing and dyeing them.

I also make felted bowls and bracelets that I dye with the same non-toxic dyes.
