pi-rok jewelry & design is a small, one (wo)man independent jewelry company based out of Richmond, Virginia. I specialize primarily in the fabrication of electroformed copper and silver jewelry.

My jewelry is handmade; this means there are flaws and variations, making each item one of a kind. If you purchase one of my pieces, do not expect to receive something perfect. Not one of my products is perfect; just like not one of my customers is perfect. This is what makes them uniquely special.

I may be a silversmith/jeweler, but I think like a scientist in how I design things. And that is the key. A silversmith must be an engineer, an architect, a scientist, and an artist, - all wrapped into one...

About

Science+Nature // Electroformed Copper Jewelry

I have always been attracted to the unexpected, the bizarre and the strange. I grew up a bit of a tomboy and enjoyed nothing more than solitary hikes through the woods, peeking under rocks in the hope of discovering the lair of some six-legged creature. Since then I have had a tremendous fascination with the natural world and a heightened interest in the scientific.

Two years ago I began to teach myself the art of working with metal. Over time, and with the help of an amazing teacher, I began to grow as an artist in both design and technique. I was eventually introduced to the process of electroforming. I wanted to create wearable art that embodied the imperfections of nature and the intrigue of science. The art of electroforming allows me to do this by combining the unique appearance of copper with a variety of beautiful rough and flawed gemstones.

Electroforming is the process of coating non-metallic objects in copper using electricity. I was first introduced to electroforming when I saw images of leaves that had been coated in copper. I started playing around with it and now I use this technique to create pieces that I feel a connection with. I find that each time, no matter how hard I try to control the end result, the ring takes on a life of its own, choosing its own appearance. I contribute to my pieces by sculpting a particular shape and painting it a particular way but the electroforming process is what determines the end result.

There is nothing more satisfying to me than knowing that my hands and vision have created something amazing and unique that can be enjoyed by others.

Additional policies and FAQs
[Lighting]
pictures are taken in lighting that best showcases the item. Please note that actual contrasts and colors may not be the same as in the photo.

[Electroforming]
more and more of the items seen in my shop have been created using the process of electroforming. Similar to electroplating, electroforming is the use of electricity to deposit a metal onto a non-metallic surface. The difference between the two is that electroformed items have a much thicker deposit of metal than electroplated items. In my experience, the process can take anywhere from 2 to 36 hours. It is a delicate time consuming process and the finished items are usually very organic in their appearance.

[Patinas]
Please note the many of the pieces in my shop are oxidized using Liver of Sulfer. Due to normal wear the oxidized appearance will fade after time. However it can always be reapplied. To reduce this process from taking place, excessive moisture should be avoided as well as prolonged wear. Each ring will behave differently in this respect but over time your piece will develop a natural patina due to normal exposure of the copper to the natural elements.
