Anyone can be PXL8d.

My memory is weak. As such, I tend to revel in nostalgia - I'm in my thirties, yet I still collect toys, arcade games, and comic books, and I have more fun at arcades and amusement parks than the kids I use as an excuse to go.

I have fond memories of Perler beads from when I was a kid - buying the little pre-made kits, taking hours to assemble them, then waiting anxiously as my mom ironed them. I wanted to share this experience with my own kids, so I started down the same path. I'd sit and work alongside them as they worked on their kits, making increasingly complex designs, until one day I decided to create a self-portrait.

Portraits of family and friends soon followed, and then it was suggested that I try and sell my work. At the time, I already managed my (much more talented) wife's Etsy shop, so I decided to create my own.

Several hundred portraits later, here I am, an accidental artist, continuing to enjoy every minute of it. I thank each and every one of my customers, who have over the years allowed me to travel this road, and to continue to see where it leads.

Additional policies and FAQs

Can I get a custom portrait of my ______ (cat, dog, motorcycle, Uncle Pete, etc.)?
Yes. The answer is yes.

How long does it take you to make a portrait?
After having completed several hundred portraits, I've been able to continuously improve my methods and techniques. My 'standard' 11x11 portrait now takes me under 3 hours, down from closer to 8 hours when I first started.

What sizes do you offer?
Experience has led me to hone in on what I call my 'standard' size of 11x11. I find that this allows for a compelling level of detail - not too much clarity, but not too little either. This works very well for single-person portraits. I typically recommend something slightly larger for two-person portraits to afford the same level of detail. I've also introduced my 'mini' portraits for those who like the concept but don't want to drop quite as much cash. As you'll see, these are typically zoomed in further on the subject, balancing detail with breadth. While not specifically listed, I can accommodate nearly any size or shape you'd like, though I tend to hold to a cap of about 16x16, as larger portraits become more risky to fuse and difficult to ship safely.

How soon after I place my order can I expect the finished product to be delivered?
While it's not a terribly exciting one, I do have something of a life, so your portrait won't actually ship 3 hours after you place your order. In short, my turn-around time depends on my backlog. I tend to get especially busy around the holidays (October - December), but most of the year I only have a few in the queue, and can get your order turned around in a week or two.

Why should I hitch my wagon to your star?
I can say in all fairness that I was the first to offer photo-realistic Perler portraits on Etsy. Since that time, I've had quite a few competitors spring up, with varying levels of skill (some are quite good) and varying prices (some are shocking). In many ways I'm flattered that so many have chosen to follow my path. As you might notice from my prices, I'm not getting rich doing this. I do it because I enjoy it, and I like keeping my work affordable and accessible to as many people as I can.
