Announcement   SALE! Most everything remaining in my shop is Ready-to-Ship and marked down by at least 30%! This is Pansy Maiden's swan song. I am pleased to announce I will closing Pansy Maiden at the end of the year in order to concentrate on launching my new business, StitchRx--a sewing pattern company. (I'll keep the few in-stock ready-to-ship bags in the shop till they sell.) Thank you for all the great years of bag making!!!

Pansy Maiden was founded with an activist spirit and one heady goal: To create and provide the world with fashion-forward, cruelty-free bags in a socially responsible manner.

To us, "cruelty-free" stands for protecting animals, our environment, and all of human-kind. We believe that all three connect in a delicate balance that must be respected and appreciated in order to move society forward. Our efforts, as far as we are concerned, just boil down to being socially responsible. Plain and simple.

Whether you are an environmentalist, a vegan, a made-in-the-usa evangelist, or simply trying to reduce your carbon footprint, we welcome you. We are all just trying to do our best to be our best. We like to think of our bags as a small step in the right direction.

Absolutely LOVE it! Beautiful colours & texture, roomy size and I know it'll be super durable (like everything I've bought from this store!). I am so glad I had a chance to grab one last Pansy Maiden creation before the shop closes. Thank you Laura, for this incredible bag, for kindly including that extra item (love it, so cute and handy!) and above all for making gorgeous VEGAN accessories! I wish you the very best in all your future endeavors!

About

Our Story

In an anxiety-ridden moment in 2007 after having watched Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, a "lighthearted" documentary about the perils of climate change, I sought solace through Google. I "Googled" terms I thought might light the way for me to get my hands dirty in the Green Movement. I wanted to be an agent of change. But most of all, I wanted the horrible feeling of helplessness I was experiencing to go away.

Pansy Maiden was born in the Spring of 2009. A year before, I knew very little about the “business” world and frankly, very little about designing and sewing bags. What I did know was that I wanted my life’s work to mean something to me. I had spent the last decade fumbling through several career paths hoping that one of them would feel right. Before blowing 30 candles out on my birthday cake, my professions had ranged from PBS TV Production Assistant in Indiana, Warner Bros. production intern in LA, Associate Director of an all-girls summer camp in Connecticut, and Executive Assistant to the CEO at a publishing company in Massachusetts. I woke up on my 30th birthday and realized what was missing: a purpose.

Around that time, I discovered and became inspired by the burgeoning DIY movement. This may sound odd but I had never really considered the fact that I could make a living wage from my art. I thought back to my college years when I had hand-sewed several bags using reclaimed denim shirts. That spark ignited a flame. I decided to try my hand at designing and constructing my own line of women’s handbags. Once I started, I never looked back. Not only did I find that I had a natural aptitude for designing durable, fashion-forward bags, I also discovered a latent aptitude for business. No one was more surprised than me.

I decided that if I was going to give this thing a go, I couldn’t be your regular, run-of-the-mill business person. My business would have to have a purpose. It was at this time that I remembered the call-to-action I had felt after having watched An Inconvenient Truth a year before. This “9-years-strong” vegetarian (now you can add “3-years-strong” vegan to that total) would have to help solve some of the problems of this world, not contribute to the problem. My ah-ha moment came when I realized that I, with the help of my company, could help spread positivity and possibly even inspire action in others.

Now flash back to that time in 2007 when I was "Googling for solace" (band name?), I came upon a quote (posted above) from Chief Seattle. I found great power and truth in that quote and have made it a part of my mantra. I very much believe that all things connect—the way we treat animals, the way we treat our Earth, the way we treat each other. If we are considerate and make efforts to treat all three with the utmost respect, our world will be a healthier and all-around better place to live. This is why my bags are 1) built with sustainability in mind--made to last many years using earth-friendly materials, 2) made in Massachusetts--providing jobs to enrich my community, and 3) cruelty-free--kind to our Earth, our animals, and fellow humans.

OK, now this last part borders on new-agey but bear with me, it’s all in the name of fun. On my 20th birthday, my friend and I went to a psychic just for some giggles. (Psychics are fun, right?!). My reading was indeed playful but there was one part that still makes the hair on my arms stand up, and I get all goose-pimply. Out of the blue, the psychic said, “Is there someone in your family named...starts with a P...Pansy?” My grandmother had already passed at the time so I listened intently as I nodded my head yes. The woman told me that “this Pansy person” was always standing over my shoulder acting as my “spirit guide” and that I should never feel alone because she is always with me. So, I like to think that the chain of events circa 2007-2009 which led me to developing my own cruelty-free brand was not random at all. Perhaps I was guided by my forward-thinking, compassionate Gran. It’s a comforting, motivating thought anyway...

Additional policies and FAQs
MADE-TO-ORDER
***********
Unless a bag listing states that a bag is "ready-to-ship," most Pansy Maiden bags are made-to-order. Once we receive your order, we will add your bag/s to our production schedule. Our production schedule usually requires a 7-10 day turn-around which means, your bag will arrive around 2 weeks after you have paid. If you should need your bag faster, contact us before you make your purchase and we will let you know if a no-fee rush is possible.

**I'm having a baby! Baby Pansy Maiden will be arriving around July 4th, therefore, my typical wait for bags will be extended. For all orders placed after May 25th, please allow around 3-4 weeks to receive your order. I will most likely be taking mid July to mid August off entirely. Thank you for your understanding!**

CUSTOM BAGS
***********
Sadly, I no longer have the time to make extensive customizations to bags at my customers' request. However, there are still a couple of ways you can customize your Pansy Maiden bag.

If you see a style you like but want a different color combo, or if you want an adjustable strap rather than a shoulder strap (or vise versa)--no problem! I can easily make this happen for you. If you would like to customize your bag in either of these ways, just send me an email so we can begin the process.

Depending upon the request, custom orders could carry a 20% fee. For instance, if you would like me to use a fabric in a color I do not currently have in stock, I will need to source the material and pay to have it shipped to me. This is an example of a customization that would require a fee. If, however, you would like to use a color I currently have in stock, there would be no fee.

Custom Orders are not eligible for return or exchange. All custom orders are final sales.

PRODUCT INFORMATION
***********
We make every attempt to display and describe our bags accurately. Pictures of our bags are taken in natural light so as to present the true colors. However, since the actual colors you see will depend upon your monitor, we cannot guarantee that your monitor's display of any color will accurately reflect the color of your bag upon delivery.

RUSH ORDERS
***********
Depending upon our production schedule, it may be possible for us to rush your order. Please contact us before making your purchase and we will let you know if your order can be rushed.

PRODUCT GUARANTEE
***********
Manufacturing defects happen very rarely but, based on the fact that we are only human, we understand we do make mistakes. If a problem develops with your bag during the first year of ownership, we will be happy to repair your bag for the cost of shipping only. This policy includes the mending of a broken strap, bag coming apart at the seams, or other issues that could be considered manufacturing defects. This policy is not extended to issues arising from the natural wear-and-tear a bag receives from general use.

WASHING INSTRUCTIONS
********
For all my 100% twill/canvas bags:
Machine washable, Delicate Cycle, Cold/Cold, lay fat to dry.
Warm iron may be required.

All other bags: Spot clean only. A little soup and water works wonders. Waxed canvas can actually be sprayed down--it's waterproof!

ABOUT OUR FABRICS
********
Martenix™ Original Waxed Canvas
Martexin Original Wax is a cotton-based fabric impregnated with Martexin wax proprietary mixture, a unique formula that gives the fabric lifelong resistance to inclement weather, while cotton fibers allow it to breathe. As the fabric ages, it develops a well-worn and comfortable patina, which enhances the look of your Pansy Maiden bag. The patina develops with more and more use, in the same manner that leather ages and burnishes with time. The Martexin formula consists of food and pharmaceutical grade waxes (all vegan), and is completely non-hazardous. The Martin family has been involved in the dyeing and finishing of textiles in the United States since 1838. Just as you wouldn't wash a leather product such as shoes, gloves, or jackets, you won’t be able to wash or dry clean your Martexin Original Wax. Wax fabrics have been successfully used for many years without washing. A periodic cleaning with a hose, damp cloth is all that is needed.

Organic Cotton (Twill and Canvas)
Organic cotton is an ecologically responsible and green fiber. Unlike conventional cotton, which uses more chemicals than any other crop, it is never genetically modified and does not use any highly polluting agro-chemicals such as those found in pesticides, herbicides and many fertilizers. Integrated soil and pest management techniques—such as crop rotation and introducing natural predators of cotton pests—are practiced in organic cotton cultivation. All organic cotton producers must meet GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) standards in their cultivation and production practices. Both land and crops must be inspected and certified by internationally reputable certifying bodies each year.

Hemp
Hemp grows extremely fast in any kind of climate. It does not exhaust the soil, uses little water, and requires no pesticides or herbicides. Dense planting leaves little space for light, hence few chances for weeds to grow. Hemp fibers are considered the strongest known to mankind next to silk. With high moisture absorbency, high heat conductivity, and excellent abrasion resistance, hemp can be made into beautiful, comfortable and long lasting items. The more you wash them, the softer they get. They age gracefully. Blended with other natural fibers, their applications become almost endless.

Tencel
(Lyocell) Made from the natural cellulose found in wood pulp. The fiber is economical in its use of energy and natural resources, and is fully biodegradable. To begin with, the forests are managed based on sustainable practices, and timber is harvested under strict guidelines and supervision, with replanting done for each tree that is cut down. Next, the fiber processing takes place in a nearly closed-loop system that is designed to recover more than 99.6% of the solvent. Water is reclaimed and reused. Tencel garments are easy to pack, resist wrinkling, and dry quickly.

Ultrasuede©
Ultrasuede© marries luxury with extreme durability (200,000+ double rubs before showing signs of wear), inherent stain resistance, breathability, and easy cleanability (machine washable/dry-cleanable). This material creates less air, water and soil contamination: According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), two-thirds less energy is required to manufacture products made out of recyclable plastic. Other studies show that the production of recycled plastic requires two-thirds less sulphur dioxide, 50% less nitrous oxide, and almost 90% less water usage. Ultrasuede© is now being made with 80% post industrial recycled fibers (recycled plastic bottles). In addition, a brand new production process has reduced the energy consumption and CO2 emissions by an average of 80%. Ultrasuede© lessens our dependence on oil (polyester is an oil-based product--Utlrasuede© is recycled!) And of course, no animals died in the making of this fabric.

Cordura©
For more than 30 years, the Cordura brand has been recognized worldwide as the fabric of choice when it comes to durability. The general rule of thumb being, if it’s built to take some serious punishment and last a long time, it’s more than likely made with Cordura. Cordura is a dense 1000/280 denier weave, but very lightweight (about 11 oz. per yard) and breathable. It has excellent resistance to scuffing and pilling under demanding conditions. Its new super-softness makes it comfortable as well as stylish and functional. Cordura is a variety of nylon (PVC and phthalate-free) which is extremely tear and scuff resistant, and whose strength-to-weight ratio is quite high. Cordura fabric is used when fabric durability is paramount, and it's often found in products like tie straps, parachutes, blade sheaths and other gear that must undergo rough treatment such as a Pansy Maiden bag.

Our EcoFriendly Faux Leather
When determining how environmentally friendly textiles are it is important to consider the useful life of the material. How long will the material be useful before it shows signs of wear and needs to be replaced? Our faux leather has been tested and has exceed 200,000 double rubs (Wyzenbeek) which surpasses the requirement of 30,000 as set by the Association of Contract Textiles (ACT) guideline. In 2002, the facility where our vegan leather is produced received ISO-14001 certification and recently achieved the company target of “zero industrial emissions.” They actively promote the reduction of waste, energy and air pollution as declared in the ISO-14001 environmental management program. The company that produces our vegan leather utilizes advanced micro-porous polyurethane wet technology which allows them to completely recycle and reuse their solvent. Unlike genuine leather and vinyl, our faux leather is inherently resistant to extreme weather conditions such as moisture, ultraviolet rays, and excessive hot and cold temperature variations. It will not become stiff or crack and its overall appearance will endure for years to come. Our faux leather is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified and does not contain PVC, heavy metals, formaldehyde, nitric acid cellulose, organic substances that continue to contaminate the environment, or any other materials that cause concern regarding the potential toxicity after use. And for a bonus round, our vegan leather is stain resistant! Oh, and of course, giant bonus: No animals (including humans) where harmed in the production of our vegan leather.

OTHER MATERIALS
EcoGlue® EcoGlue industrial strength glue is a water-based environmentally-safe glue that has less than 1% VOC by weight, virtually no hazardous air pollutants (less than 0.165 by weight), and no animal derivatives or hazardous pollutants. The bottle and card are packaged with recyclable plastic and paper to further strengthen its Earth Friendly promise.

Clean And Green Laundry Soap
We wash our cotton fabrics using this handmade-in-New-England brand which is all-natural and animal friendly.

All items are made in a smoke-free environment. I do have a sweet Golden Retriever named Clementine who is not allowed in my studio. "NO, Clem! Good girl."
