About

Take Comfort in Nature

I’m an artist /gardener who loves growing flowers and sharing the joyful nature of plants with people through my artwork. A painting and sculptor by training, I've also sewn all my life- starting with doll clothes!

The Story...sorry, it’s long..!
Soon after college, I migrated from painting to fabric applique because texture fascinates me. I made clothing and banners by hand, combining found fabrics with new. Several years ago, I began shooting around with a Pentax camera. I was thrilled to discover how much flowers and leaves in the garden reminded me of my first love: cloth. Sunlight and shadows are variable as they travel through the day- highlighting unique textures and shapes. My very first (and lasting subjects) are hosta plants, which I’m crazy about. This spring I hope to begin working with two new varieties. White Feather and Aphrodite.

Photography
To arrive at these first ten designs, I’ve tested color progression from garden to digital photography to textile printing. It’s been challenging to migrate from the “hands-on” style of painting to the sometimes-frustrating world of technology (camera to design software) and textile printing- always holding out for my artistic vision. It's equally important to manage color repeatability that printing affords and that artists demand.

Design
I use a Micro Nikkor 105mm 1:2.8G lens on a Nikon D7000. It’s a very special lens that assures me I’ll realize my best vision for each image. After shooting I download photos and begin the process of editing, ultimately re-creating a new image for print. I update each photo in Photoshop as necessary to create something new. As an artist/sculptor, it’s important that even though a photo is two- dimensional, it has the capacity to appear three dimensional like a sculpture. How cool is it that? I fabricate designs that are made for throw pillows because they wrap the entire pillow. The front joins to the back.

Fiber Reactive Printing
After initial art is finalized, test printing begins in North Carolina. Final pillow artwork is copyrighted only after it’s been tested many times with myriad color adjustments in between. I tested many kinds of printing and ultimately chose fiber reactive printing over pigment based because it saturates the fabric throughout. My absolutely favorite fabric is 100% cotton sateen- simply, the best surface for photos. Sateen also washes and wears wonderfully. We use no finishes because why use any more chemicals then absolutely necessary? The fabric is washed and pressed after printing to set and clean away residual dyes.

Sewing
A few years ago, hand sewing as a career came to an abrupt end. I had surgery on one hand to repair cartilage. I knew that sacrificing my other hand wasn’t the answer. I baste and only make improvements that might surface in quality control. I fulfill pillows here in Connecticut so I can stay close with the whole process. Each pillow travels from my hands to yours. I work with local seamstresses to test each design, identify thread/zipper colors and establish the process ensuring that every side matches. A real pain in the neck- but worth it! The pillows are not entirely square because they’re designed with slightly rounded corners to hug the insert better. All seams are double stitched and overcast to last with an invisible zipper stitched in snug at the openings. Today my pillows are sewn in New Jersey with a great young woman-owned business I found through a friend. (You can see them listed under manufacturers) If you’d like more details, contact me in person.

Inserts
All inserts are not created equal. They’re also a lot more expensive to ship than covers so you can choose a cover only or the whole pillow. My 20” feather/down inserts are the perfect blend of white duck down and feather- for ideal fit and back support. I did an exhaustive search in the US to find a company that would give the best fit and comfort. We’ve been using them for over a year and love them! We have ten active designs and limited inventory in stock on each. They’re ready to travel so you can get them right away. Design possibilities are limitless… we’re starting small, if you like the work, share the word and help us grow! I blog twice weekly to share ideas, garden tips and design for home and garden. Music has always been a big part of my world; I like to share what I'm listening to for others to enjoy. Will you join me? Click on my blog link below.

Frequently asked questions

Digital Image Color

Colors can be highly subjective. I work carefully to publish images true to actual color. Monitors vary. Reach out to me with your questions first. I can help. If you think you want more then one of the same cover, order them together. There can be slight variations between printings of the same image too. The images originate in my garden! Consider their source and love the variations as I do.

Sizing Details for Pillow Covers and Inserts

Each cover starts as a rectangle that gets printed, washed, ironed and folded down to an 18" square for fabrication. The invisible zipper is color matched, stitched in and the opening reinforced by hand.

All inserts are not created equal! We recommend a 20", 20 oz. feather/down insert for best presentation. We offer a custom made feather/down blend that's hypoallergenic, which I recommend. Perfect size, a 100% cotton cover that's down proof.

Care instructions

My covers are made of 100% cotton, permanently printed and already washed. For cleaning, I recommend hand washing ( they smell nicer) in a mild soap you'd use for fine hand washables. Tumble dry low, and iron with a cotton setting. You can use a damp press cloth but it's not necessary. I love our cotton - it gets softer over time. It will also have some fade as all indoor fabric does. The good news is that you have the same image on both sides!
