I graduated from Sir Wilfred University in Waterloo, Ontario ,then pursued various studies in Literature , Language and Education at McMaster University and the University of Toronto.
Sixteen years of teaching adolescents taught me about self-discipline . communication and concentration that I now bring to my career: drawing.
I had no formal artist training . I started seriously drawing in the later part of 1985 with no background in art whatsoever. With my devotion to detail it will come as no surprise that my favorite artists include Andrew Wyeth and Robert Bateman. I have experimented with watercolor, acrylic, oil and pastel but my first love is pencil, which allows me to play with detailed facial lines and wrinkles , folds of garments and cloth, the exactness of feathers , the cracks, and knots in wood, the play of light on individual strands of hair and the moods and expressions caught in a wonderful cross section of the very young to the experienced and aged. Since then I have taught myself about art through books, magazines , films, museums and other artists.
Although I started by drawing wildlife , a subject which I still pursue avidly, I also love to depict faces, emotions and expressions of people , many of whom I remember from my past, individuals whose paths I crossed in my travels to various parts of the world such as Ireland , England and the Caribbean as well as Canada and the United States.
The challenge is to capture a universal essence and mood rather than to depict a specific individual. It is this universality that I see in the strong ,stoical, enduring quality of the American Indian as seen in portraits taken at the turn of the century. Many of these portraits have inspired my own drawings of Native Americans and drawings of older people whose expressions convey a personal story to which each one of us can respond.
Despite my lack of training in art I have been honored and recognized through numerous awards . My work has been published , I have been involved in group shows as well as in one person shows. I am a charter member of National Museum of the American Indian, a member of Ulster Arts Alliance, the Empire States Craft Alliance as well as a number of wildlife groups.
