About

Welcome to Park Hotel

My mom saved a drawing that I made when I was about 5 years old of a girl sewing. Next to the picture I wrote in my wobbly, newly learned handwriting: "I whant to be a person who makes things for people." I love having that picture to look at now 35+ years later as someone who still wants to be a person who makes things for people. When I was in college I taught myself to sew so that I could make myself pretty patchwork sundresses like the ones I saw all the lovely, twirling hippie girls wearing at Grateful Dead shows. Before long I was making sundresses and squashy patchwork hats to sell on the road as I followed the band up and down and around the eastern half of the United States in the summers.

My grandparents owned and operated the Park Hotel in Wells, Minnesota. The hotel was built in the 1870's and was a major stopping point for traveling salesmen as the hotel was located beside the railroad. The salesmen would display their wares in the basement of the hotel and the local merchants would come to buy from them. Hobos would jump off and on the trains and knew that the hotel was a place where they could earn a little money doing odd jobs. Guests would come in to rent a room and my grandfather would tell them to take any key from the box of keys he kept on the counter because they all fit. Most of the time my grandfather would just leave a board up that showed the room numbers that were available and instructions to take a number and a key and leave money in an envelope on the counter. He was never cheated. The hotel was, and still is, endlessly fascinating to me. Even though the hotel was torn down in 1978, when I was six years old, it still lives in my imagination and in the stories I've gathered from relatives.

I started the Park Hotel shop here on Etsy as a way of pulling together my passions for making, collecting and storytelling. My vision for my shop has always been to somehow recreate the feeling of an old railroad hotel with interesting characters passing through. My shop blends the thoughtfully handmade with the carefully collected. I think they really don't make things the way they used to. We live in an increasingly disposable society and I think that is a terrible thing. I make things that are meant to last. I believe in rescuing, reusing and recycling forgotten treasures. And, I believe in the beauty of simple designs and honest materials.

Wish me luck and stay tuned.
