Park Place Handcrafted: The Making of a Business
My love of textiles and images came first, springing out of a childhood spent in the 4-H Youth Development Program. As a 4-H member, I got my first sheep in third grade and a few years later learned to spin and weave the wool from my sheep. My mom taught me to sew in 4-H and I was tailoring by the time I was in junior high school. I have always dabbled in photography, dyeing, and jewelrymaking, doing these activities as whimsy strikes me. Pottery came later when I took my first ceramics class in college. I fell in love with pottery and took as many classes as I could before finishing my English degree. Later in life I had the opportunity to go back to school and complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in ceramics. I've been doing ceramics for 20 years now.
While in school, I decided to sell my pottery at the local farmer's market, and Park Place Handcrafted & Professional Services was born in 1999. Why the Professional Services? Somewhere along the way, I started doing freelance editing and graphic design projects, and these were also part of the "me" that I was marketing.
Since that time, I have sold pottery and my other artwork at markets, craft shows, and museum stores, to strangers, friends, and repeat customers. I have travelled the US as a Navy spouse with my awesome husband, become a mom to two beautiful girls, and earned Journeyman Level Master Weaver certification in the San Diego Creative Weavers' Guild.
I am now back home in Tacoma, Washington, where I'm working to expand my inventory, build my Etsy business, and participate in craft shows as time allows. I work, have many hobbies, and spend lots of time with my family and friends, so I am blessed to have a full and rich life. I am fortunate to have a family that supports and encourages my artistic endeavors.

I am really happy to say that everything in this shop is made, photographed, described, and sold by me. I love Etsy because it lets me apply my fine arts and English degrees toward selling the things that I love to make!
My approach to ceramics is to create technically sound pots that feel good in the hand and I use freehand brushwork to add glaze interest. I believe that pottery is intrinsically linked to the clay from which it comes, thus I like leaving areas of the natural clay exposed. I throw pots on the wheel and also do some handbuilding. I fire to cone 6 (2232 degrees) in an electric kiln and use lead-free glazes.
My textile arts stem from an appreciation of fiber and color. I like to develop projects based on the materials I find squirreled away in my stash, some of which are inherited or recycled from other projects or artists.
I also enjoy photography and digital imaging and do freelance graphic design and editing.

I am happy to ship my products internationally, as permitted by law, but I don't want either of us to get burned by shipping fees---if you are an international customer and would like an exact shipping quote for your location, please contact me and I'll be happy to find the best option for you. Any fees imposed at Customs will be your responsibility.
If you pay with PayPal, I will use your PayPal address, otherwise I will use your Etsy address, unless you tell me otherwise. Please ensure that your address information is up-to-date. If you need me to send your purchase to an address other than what you have listed in Etsy, such as for a gift, please use that address for the ship to: address when you check out, and let me know any other relevant information in the comments section of your order.
If you need gift wrapping, please add the listed Gift Wrap item to your order for $5.
If you would like to order several items from my shop and would like to get an exact quote for shipping instead of using the "shipping with another item" cost, I would be happy to provide you with that based on your destination and the size of box needed for your order. I will refund any shipping overages that exceed $2 above the actual cost of shipping and packaging materials.
