About

Pastoral City -- nature thrives anywhere!

I've always loved birds, but when I started a job across the street from a large, well-maintained park, I was amazed at all the species that were present in the middle of Brooklyn. I had no idea how many birds had been right under my nose! So I began carrying a camera with me every day, cutting through the park on my way to and from work and spending my lunch breaks wandering through the more wooded areas. In less than a year, I had captured shots of over 50 different species of birds, ranging from those we see almost every day (pigeons, house sparrows, and American robins), to birds that are seen only a few times per season (indigo buntings, field sparrows, and gray-cheeked thrush). I still get a thrill of excitement when I see the first white-throated sparrow appear in the fall or when young birds fledge in late spring and summer.

Because I carry my camera with me on a daily basis, it needs to be lightweight and compact. For this reason, I use a Canon SX700 HS. It's a mid to high end point and shoot with 16 megapixels, 30x optical zoom, and full manual capabilities. It has served me well so far, but I will likely add a DSLR to my collection sometime in the near future.

Most of my photos have some minor edits done in Adobe Photoshop. None are altered significantly from their original form; typically, my modifications enhance color and crop images to frame the subject better. Occasionally I might remove a blade of grass or reed that distracts from the bird itself. I never alter the setting or change colors outright. I want my pictures to reflect what I see when I'm out with my camera.

I do have another Etsy shop where I sell my jewelry: etsy.com/shop/stonelarkjewelry

Welcome to Pastoral City Photography! I am a Brooklyn-based photographer and lover of nature -- especially birds. Despite this love, I am a city girl at heart. So I've made it a goal to spend as much time as possible in New York's abundant parks and gardens, where nature thrives.
