About

Watercolor Painting

My career in painting has spanned a decade, although I spent much of my life preparing for painting by working with photography. Painting was a step into the unknown. It has been a rewarding choice. My work has won awards in the Watercolor Society exhibits, I have had paintings chosen for national water media shows, and I have taught some watercolor classes. I have had the honor to study with some very fine artists, including Janet Rogers, Andy Evansen, Dan Wiemar, Frank Webb, and soon, Alvaro Castanet.
I grew up in a mining community in the 50's-60's in northern Minnesota. Our parents told us that the only way to succeed was to get out of our small town, go to school, and find a profession that we could always fall back on. The careers available to me, a girl, in those days were pretty much teaching or nursing. I chose teaching-- French. There had always been in me this creative mischievous elf-self, so in addition to teaching, I kept up my side activities: playing guitar and singing in a band, taking photographs, starting a tour company to take Americans to France to learn cooking, giving cooking classes. Teaching French offered me a world of new experiences: a beautiful language, travel, new people and ideas, music, cooking, culture--more creative stuff. I ended up living for 16 years in the South of France, in Provence, a place which filled my heart with its beauty and old-age wisdom. There is a light in Provence that artists are drawn to--and that light did something for me. It is that light that turned me on to painting.
I returned home to Minnesota in 2001. I had a few teaching years left ahead of me. For some reason, I took a watercolor class one summer, when I had free time. Something to do. And then it all exploded! I just loved this watercolor painting, very quickly became driven to paint. I was still teaching and then painting on my dining room table in the evenings. There was this feeling that had also come to me with music, these moments of pure joy.
And now I continue after 10 years to paint, and my goal is to go deeper, to find and share that deep joy. I am happy painting; I think my work is happy work. I hope that it spreads some of my joy, some of that light that was shed on me in Provence.

Hello, Thanks for visiting my watercolor painting, tiles, and print site.
Let me introduce myself. A French teacher who apparently had an epiphany in art, I have been painting watercolors for the past ten years. This passion revealed itself after I had returned from a 20-year stay in the South of France. Something must have clicked from that experience, what a beautiful place! I paint whatever I see that interests me, anything from still life to a plate of tomatoes. Light inspires me, and I love to play with color.

In my work I use watercolr paints, mostly Holbein, sometimes a little pastel for highlights, and I paint on Arches French watercolor paper, which is archival (The painting will last for at least 100 years!). My prints are professionally printed on top quality MOAB Somerset Velvet paper, which is archival.
