Al crecer, pasé mucho tiempo con mi querida abuela, que era artista. Naturalmente, me proporcionó un suministro interminable de cuadernos y utensilios de dibujo, y le encantaba compartir su amor y conocimiento de la caligrafía y los estilos de letras conmigo. En sus jóvenes días de carrera, había sido responsable de decorar las exhibiciones y ventanas en las grandes tiendas como Loewenstein's y Bry's en el centro de Memphis, mientras que los hombres que normalmente tenían esos trabajos estaban fuera en guerra. Sus estanterías estaban repletas de viejos libros de texto de arte y manuales de letras, y los examiné detenidamente sin cesar, fascinado con los ligeros matices, así como con las enormes variedades en todos los diseños de letras. Cada vez que tenía un proyecto artístico que completar para la escuela, siempre sabía llevarlo a su casa para trabajar, porque ella se sentaba a mi lado todo el tiempo, charlando conmigo sobre cualquier cosa, compartiendo historias y risas, y ofreciéndole una visión artística experimentada mientras trabajaba.
Con el tiempo me gradué de la Universidad Bautista de Ouachita con una licenciatura en comunicaciones de masas y una especialización en arte. Sin embargo, una vez que comencé a obtener algo de experiencia laboral en relaciones públicas y marketing, me di cuenta de que estaba especialmente aprovechado para usar mis habilidades artísticas una y otra vez. En el camino, siempre me sorprendió que a la gente le gustara mi trabajo tanto como a ellos: siempre había sido tan natural para mí, una parte tan natural de lo que era, que realmente nunca lo había pensado mucho, aparte de elegirlo como mi menor (principalmente porque realmente lo disfruté).
Más tarde fui a Louisville para estudiar educación cristiana con énfasis en el ministerio de mujeres en el Seminario Teológico Bautista del Sur. ¡Tenía tres clases de graduarme con mi maestría cuando di a luz a gemelas idénticas casi 11 semanas antes! Por supuesto, mis días han estado llenos desde entonces. Cuando mis hijas tenían unos dos años, en un intento de traer algún ingreso adicional mientras me quedaba en casa con ellas, llevé algunas muestras de mi trabajo de lettering a una papelería para ver cómo conseguir algunos sobres de direcciones comerciales. Estaba encantada de que les encantaran mis estilos de letras, y más tarde esa tarde, me llamaron con mi primera tarea: un mapa de bodas. Terminé ese mapa en noviembre de ese año, ¡y me he mantenido ocupado con un flujo constante de proyectos desde entonces! ¡Qué emocionante aventura ha sido, y qué bendición!
Mi abuela falleció en febrero de 2013. La extraño mucho todos los días, y desearía que supiera sobre Pearl & Rose Designs. Ojalá pudiera llevar mis proyectos a su casa para trabajar y obtener su opinión, pero afortunadamente siento que hizo un trabajo tan bueno a lo largo de los años de compartir sus talentos conmigo que casi puedo escuchar su voz en mi cabeza mientras trabajo. ;) Y, sobre todo, estoy agradecida de que haya podido conocer a pearl y Rose de la vida real, mis hijas gemelas. (¡Perla y Rosa son sus segundos nombres!) Espero que disfrutes de mi trabajo aquí, y si hay algo que te gustaría ver que actualmente no estoy ofreciendo, ¡házmelo saber! Muchas gracias.
Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my dear Grandma, who was an artist. Naturally, she provided me with an endless supply of drawing pads and utensils, and she loved sharing her love and knowledge of calligraphy and lettering styles with me. In her young career days, she had been responsible for decorating the displays and windows at the big stores like Loewenstein's and Bry's in downtown Memphis while the men who normally held those jobs were away at war. Her bookshelves were overflowing with old art textbooks and lettering manuals, and I pored over them endlessly, fascinated with the slight nuances as well as the enormous varieties in all the lettering designs. Whenever I had an artistic project to complete for school, I always knew to take it over to her house to work on, because she would sit right beside me the whole time, chatting with me about anything and everything, sharing stories and laughter, and offering her seasoned artistic insight as I worked.
In time I graduated from Ouachita Baptist University with a B.A. in mass communications and a minor in art. However, once I started getting some work experience in public relations and marketing, I realized that I was especially tapped to use my artistic skills again and again. Along the way, I was always surprised that people liked my work as much as they did -- it had always been so second-nature to me, such a natural part of who I was, that I had really never given it much thought, aside from choosing it as my minor (mostly because I really enjoyed it).
Later on I went to Louisville to study Christian education with an emphasis in women's ministry at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. I was three classes from graduating with my M.A. when I delivered identical twin girls nearly 11 weeks early! Of course my days have been full ever since. When my girls were about two years old, in an attempt to bring in some side income while staying home with them, I took some samples of my lettering work up to a stationery store to see about getting some business addressing envelopes. I was thrilled that they loved my lettering styles, and later that afternoon, they called me with my first assignment: a wedding map. I finished that map in November that year, and I have stayed busy with a constant stream of projects ever since! What an exciting adventure it has been, and what a blessing!
My Grandma passed away in February 2013. I miss her so much every day, and I wish she knew about Pearl & Rose Designs. I wish I could take my projects over to her house to work on and get her input on, but thankfully I feel like she did such a good job over the years of sharing her talents with me that I can almost hear her voice in my head as I work! ;) And most of all, I'm thankful she was able to get to know the real-life Pearl and Rose, my twin daughters.
