About PegandAwl

Sales 29,204
On Etsy since 2010

We are husband and wife with 2 boys Søren and a boy called Silas, our dog Pearl, and an abundance of other creatures.

We are husband and wife with a boy called Søren and a boy called Silas. We work and create in Philadelphia, Penna and live on the 5 Acre Wood in West Chester. Our work is made from olde things, treasures found and recovered from misfortune and neglect, relics of the unusual, the confused and the macabre, cut and pulled and built into wearable curiosities, inscribable keepsakes, and useable, long-lasting treasures—and when the old eludes us, we use sustainable materials. We used to make these items for ourselves, and now we make them for everyone.

Peg and Awl began without a plan, a fortunate pairing of two minds, different but in sync. Both Walter and I have a fervor for history, though we each unearth our passions in different ways. I, Margaux, love the Romantic imaginings of what once was and the effects time and stories have on materials and objects. Though not military-minded, I am an invader, mostly of abandoned houses and the past. Walter was homeschooled by his history-aficionado mother and apprenticed to his carpenter father, before becoming a soldier in the American Army. There he learned how to do things effectively and simply, though his practical nature does not preclude his immense creativity. Walter’s pragmatism, my own dreamy tendencies, and our shared curiosity combined to create Peg and Awl. With our two boys as constant companions, we find inspiration in them as much as we do in the past, taking notes and creating new objects to delight younger beings—Peg and Awl is not just for big people.

After nearly bursting our house with the weight of materials, makers, and ideas, in 2012 we finally decided to move the business elsewhere—to the Atlas Casket Factory. But in 2017, growing pains led us to seek new land, and during our voyages, we discovered our new home, the Foundlings Building, in Port Richmond, Philadelphia—spacious, an acre of sunshine (or whatever the weather brings!), bordered by an elevated train track, begging for a garden, an inspiring place to create more treasures, photographs, jobs, and joyful days.

We named the building Foundlings, and it is our hope to discover much about this tiny piece of land, both through the locals’ stories and hopefully underground. (Look for me with a metal detector or a privy stick!) Our acre was carved out in the early 1800s, as evidenced by some old maps (PhilaGeoHistories). There were homes built upon it and torn down, and sometime between 1934 and 1942, our building was erected as the new home of the Phoenix Dye Works. In the 1980s it was closed up (maybe even before), and in it grew a darkness, loaded with leavings and a tale of years. When Walter tore through the ceiling to put in skylights, the dirt and dust came alive, dancing in beams of sunlight, detritus of an old building, yet eager to settle, like us, in a new home. Histories overlap, ghosts linger, and the ethereal reaches out to the corporeal.

Yet here at Peg and Awl, we are ready to begin building our own stories in venerable Philadelphia, for we are nothing if not makers, and our own tale of years has begun a new chapter.

Frequently asked questions

What is Peg and Awl?

We are a husband and wife with a boy called Søren and a boy called Silas. We live and work in Philadelphia, Penna. Our work is made from olde things, treasures found and recovered from misfortune and neglect, relics of the unusual, the confused and the macabre, cut and pulled and built into wearable curiosities, inscribable keepsakes and useable, long-lasting treasures. We used to make them for ourselves and now we make them for everyone.

Do you guarantee your products?

We guarantee our products to be free of defects in the materials or craftsmanship. We will be happy to replace any defective products. Wear from normal usage is not included in this guarantee. We believe firmly in creating enduring products whose lifespan can be lengthened by repair. Many of the materials in our products have already seen at least one lifetime of use, and have accumulated stories which are now proudly displayed in the blemishes on our objects. Each further crack, dent, &c. accumulated throughout each object’s new life – and the patches applied thereto – are further stories to proudly display. To contact us about repairs, please send us a message.

When will my order arrive? Can I expedite my order?

We do our best to maintain an inventory of each object. However, we hand-make all of our products in our Philadelphia workshoppe. If your product is not in stock when you order, it may take up to 10 days to ship – we have to make it! Orders shipped to the contiguous U.S. typically take 2 days to a week arrive. If you would like to expedite your order please send us a message before placing your order. Since our products are made by hand, we would need to verify that we have your item in stock in order to ensure it will arrive in time.

Can you make my bag a little bigger or smaller? Can you make be a custom bag?

Making size or style alterations to bags is a very complicated process and we do not offer this service.

What materials do you use?

FABRIC: We use 15 oz. waxed duck canvas (19 oz. with wax) for most of our bags. Waxed canvas originated in the sailing industry in Scotland in the 1920s and became widely used because of its waterproofing abilities and superb durability.

WOOD: Our wood products are made from wither reclaimed wood from old-growth trees, or new wood sourced from sustainable forests.

LEATHER: The bits of leather that cover our books are either gathered willy-nilly from farms, flea markets and shoppes across the world, or new vegetable-tanned leather. Leather straps and handles on our bags are vegetable-tanned leather.

METAL: We use only sterling silver and 14K gold. Our bronze is an alloy that we have matched closely to the color of gold.

Will this bag fit my computer / tablet / &c.?

The dimensions of all of our bags are listed at the bottom of each bag’s Etsy page.

Can I get a longer strap for my bag or more holes in the strap?

You can order a longer strap by searching in our Etsy shoppe and adding the Longer Leather Strap for Tote, Finch or Hunter item to your order. Link: www.etsy.com/listing/180196137

If you would like additional holes in your strap, please include the number and placement in your order notes.

How do I care for my Peg and Awl object?

BAGS: Waxed canvas like leather does not require full cleaning and should not be machine washed, machine dried, or dry cleaned. If necessary, spot clean your waxed canvas with cold water using a sponge or gentle brush. Store in a dry place to prevent mold and mildew. Waxed canvas will better with age, but will need to be re-waxed in time. We recommend using Martexin Wax.

KITCHEN OBJECTS: Our kitchen objects are finished with Bartram Wood Balm, a natural balm that restores and preserves wood. We recommend that kitchen objects be refinished with Bartram Wood Balm when they start to get dull and look worn. Hand wash kitchen objects in hot water to clean. Do not let stand in water. Bartram Wood Balm is available in our Etsy shoppe.

Do you offer personalization?

Bags can be ordered with a three letter leather monogram using the drop-down menu on each bag’s product page. Please include the letters you wish to have monogrammed in your cart/order notes.

Most of our wood products can be personalized with engraving by selecting one of our engraving options on the product’s Etsy page. Please read the product’s description and look at its images for more information on placement and character limits. Please include the text you wish to have engraved in your cart/order notes.

How do I find my ring size?

The best way to find your ring size is to go to a physical jewelry store and get measured. You can also search online for a ring sizing guide. We will resize rings for free once (buyer is responsible for return shipping to our workshoppe). Any additional re-sizings can be done for a small fee. Please contact us for resizing information.
