From Amish patchwork quilts to custom hand-dyed batik from Bali - this is my life designing Island-inspired fashion, home decor, and gifts..
Hi, I have been designing and producing a color and print driven line of island-inspired batik clothing since 1990. Pelangi Design offers a limited edition range of high quality hand-dyed batik clothing for everyone in the family. Everything in my shop is made from hand-dyed cotton batik; girl's dresses, men's shorts, boho women's clothing and more. I also love to design my own original patchwork duvet covers and pillow cases made from all the colorful fabric scraps.
I grew up surrounded by the Amish, famous for their patchwork quilts, in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. After graduating with a Graphic Design degree and working in the Advertising and Graphic Design field in Boston for 5 years in the mid '80s, I traveled extensively through Europe, India, Australia, and New Zealand (by bicycle) and eventually made my way to South East Asia.
There, on the island of Java, I was introduced to the ancient art of batik. I had tried making batik in highschool art classes but this batik was like nothing I had ever seen before. Brilliant jewel tone colors and simple, contemporary, childlike patterns. Hand-dyed Bali batik became my passion.
In 1986 Bali became my permanent home. I settled into starting a family and after my first child was born decided to try my hand at making children's clothing. After much trial and error my efforts turned into the business you see today. I design all the children's clothing fabrics and have them custom made for me in Bali.
Children's clothing sizes can be very confusing so I taught myself how to make patterns and do the size grading myself to ensure the right fit for large Western kids. I design and produce each and every garment using my own color coordinated prints to create the brilliantly colored signature look Pelangi Design clothing is known for.
My contemporary one-of-a-kind patchwork pillow cases and duvet covers offer another outlet for my creative energy and a perfect way to use up leftover bits of fabric.
My 2 kids are grown and I am now living and creating in Western Australia.
