The pic attached is a custom order of the skirt (tagged). It's amazing how different the same style can look in different fabrics!
I love using vintage buttons in my designs. This is one of the many unique buttons I have used over the years! And each copy of this skirt will have one unique to each other!

About

Penelope Red: A creative life

My name is Penelope and I started sewing with my Mum when I was about 5 years old. I started this business in 2007, but I think from a very early age I knew that I wanted to eventually one day be a fashion designer.

While I studied at fashion school, and after I graduated, I created a lot of my own wardrobe, and I would receive comments every time I wore my own designs. I had found employment in fashion to have very little involvement in creativity, and more to do with office admin, and I needed to find out for myself what I wanted to do with my life. I travelled around America and Europe, and once I arrived in Paris it was the turning point I needed... It was the city where I fell in love with Art Nouveau, and where I decided my dreams of becoming a fashion designer. I guess with so much beauty surrounding you in a city, you can't help but be inspired! I can remember thinking to myself; if all of these artisans who created these beautiful masterpieces could dream, then why can't I?

I had been tossing up what career path I wanted before I left for my European trip. I was thinking of studying a teacher's degree, or coming home and starting my own label while working part time somewhere. One path guaranteed a career and enough money; the other path would be rocky and little money, but was where my heart truly lied. Paris was like a beacon yelling out to me, "this is what you MUST do!” I fell in love with so many different types of art and architecture while in Paris and in the other European cities I visited. When I view my designs now, it is easy to see what inspires me; even my customers say my designs look more European than Australian.

I started the business by attending two of Sydney’s most famous markets, Paddington Markets on Oxford Street, then The Rocks Markets, and eventually selling online.

My style is always inspired by vintage silhouettes- I grew up watching old Hollywood movie stars, such as Rita Hayworth, Ginger Rogers, Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell, with my Dad- but I like to mix this with my modern sensibilities. I was once famous at Paddington Markets for corsets and catsuits, and I had a knack for creating very fitted garments. Now I love exploring different designs in jersey knit, flared sleeves, pencil skirts, and dresses. When I started selling I didn't use jersey knit, but now it is my primary seller. I think it just shows that its great to experiment, because you never know what will happen!

I am involved in every step of the creative process in my business, I get to do all the things I love (and a few things I don’t love too… like paperwork…yuk). I am a self confessed fabriholic- I honestly can’t hold back when it comes to a fabulous fabric, so I pride myself on amazing prints and good quality textiles. A lot of my designs have been made from my collection of vintage finds, which I compliment with the latest fashion fabrics. I mainly design my one of a kind designs as I cut them out, since its usually due to not having a large amount of the one fabric- something that I could never do if I created designs in bulk or worked for someone else. In an industry that is almost entirely created off-shore, I am pleased to say that every step is conducted in Sydney, from image in my head to the finished product.

For the first 5 years I created and sewed every single product, but recently I have not been able to keep up with the demand and my imagination. I currently now have help from Lina, who is a semi-retired machinist, and she has over 30 years experience. I currently design, pattern-make, and cut every single Penelope Red garment.

I love the freedom of creativity that Penelope Red gives me; I love the freedom of working when I want to work, and when you have a little boy to look after this makes all the difference! I love the convenience of selling online, and I love the idea that people from across the world can view and have access to my designs!

When I first started the ultimate goal was to eventually open a Penelope Red retail shop, however now I believe this is an old fashioned idea with the current economic climate and choices that we have available today. Now I am aiming to grow my online presence, as well as create Penelope Red shopping events in Sydney (and hopefully other cities added eventually!) that will also give me the freedom to explore more design ideas but also have a beautiful family life with my hubby and son.

I hope that when a customer receives a Penelope Red parcel they are delighted and amazed… delighted that it looks and feels better on than they expected, and amazed at the craftsmanship and quality. I enjoy so much of what I do, and I hope others will continue to appreciate and support my dreams.

Welcome to Penelope Red. All items are handmade, to bring to my customers individuality, quality, style, and a little bit of "wow" factor!

I ask for measurements, rather than size when ordering, as sizes from brand to brand change.

As soon as payment is received, I will ship your purchase by the next following work day (Monday to Friday), unless it is a custom order and I have otherwise contacted you.

Your beautiful garments will be individually wrapped up in tissue paper, and sent with a thank you note, just to make it that little bit more special!

I use Australia Post to ship goods currently, and they deliver world wide.

For Australian deliveries, I use the Express Post option.

For overseas deliveries, I use registered post. This option is more expensive, but the peace of mind is worth it- you receive a tracking number, and you must sign for it upon arrival.

If you would like to have your purchase insured, then please contact me regarding fees.

The shipping charges do not include any customs or duty charges that may be due in a particular country. Penelope Red has no control over those charges and they are the sole responsibility of the person placing the order.
Refunds and Exchanges
Please be sure to check your measurements when placing an order. The measurements for each garment can easily be obtained by starting a conversation with me to help ensure there are no unnecessary returns.

Penelope Red will accept exchanges on items that do not fit, however, the shipment back to Penelope Red, and back to the customer, is the responsibility of the customer. Please be sure to contact me within 14 days from date of shipment, if you need to exchange a garment.

Please note all sale items will not be refundable. (They can be exchanged for something else of equal or lesser value if the fit is not right.)

I always double check each garment before shipping, as well as I wrap everything in tissue paper as well as plastic to avoid liquid penetrating, however, if a garment has some how been damaged during shipment, please contact me ASAP. I will then need to contact Australia Post regarding this.
Additional policies and FAQs
Sizing and Fit:
With every design, I base my sizing on an Australian size 10 and then adjust accordingly for each design. I am sure you would know, standard sizing is never easy to find. Generally a standard AU size 10 woman should have the following BODY measurements:

Bust: 34.5inches
Waist: 27.5inches
Hip: 38inches

Where I have substituted the US sizing, I have just applied the rule that you need to take away 4 digits from your AU sizing to get the equivalent US. This is usually used internationally, so if you are an Australian size 10, then you would be an American size 6, an AU size 8 would be a US size 4 and so on.

I grade my patterns from an AU size 10, to another AU size by 2 inches per size. E.g. an AU size 12, is 2 inches bigger all around then an AU size 10.

Please note that this is just a guide to keep in mind and as designs vary and fabrics play a part, please always check the measurements given for each style and measure that against your body.
