Took a while to receive print due to extenuating circumstances, but once I did, Kate graciously gave me a few extra goodies. And the print is lovely! Thank you!

Nature and wild, open spaces, illustrated by Kate Garchinsky

"My little Snowbird."

So my father nicknamed me the week I was born. I'm told that the streets of suburban Philadelphia were as slick and icy as the hood of my parents' powder blue Volkswagon Beetle on the day I came home from the hospital. I came to love snow storms very early in life.

Birds too.

My mother and I began our morning routine with trip to the backyard. She'd hold me on her hip and we'd invite the sparrows and blackbirds to breakfast with a scattering of stale breadcrumbs. One of these mornings I pointed at the birds on the ground, and babbled my first word: "birdie."

The next thing I learned was art. By the end of my second year I could hold a crayon, and I would mimic my mother's movements as she drew slow, simple shapes on her writing tablet.

Circle + lines = pumpkin
Circle + lines + triangles = Jack o' lantern
3 stacked circles + dots = snowman
Oval + dots + triangles = penguin

I earned my first blue ribbon in 6th grade and began taking advanced art classes on Saturdays. In college I landed at the University of the Arts and delved into children's illustration. I went on to design toys for Zany Brainy and FAO Schwarz for a while, followed by an unexpected detour to the glorious mountains of Colorado. Among the snowbirds and snowmen I fell in love with plein air painting, and brought it back with me to the Pennsylvania lowlands in 2009. Since then I've been painting, sketching, and showing my work whenever possible, writing and illustrating the stories I've lived along the way.

How about the birds? I still invite them to the yard, but with native plantings and seeds rather than breadcrumbs. I volunteer in wild bird care at Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research in Newark, Delaware, and recently joined their Oil Response Team after receiving over 200 oiled birds in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Hi. Who am I? I'm an artist, writer, illustrator, musician, renaissance-girl with several fingers dipped in many arts at any given time. All my art is 100% original, by me. I'm a bit new to selling on Etsy but have been shopping here a while and I've been an illustrator, artist and designer for the past 13 years. I've created this shop to help me keep my independence as a self-employed individual.
