About PennysPixiePlanters

On Etsy since 2015

"It'll be fun." they said. "Just a part time hobby..." they said. Well...that "fun" "part-time hobby" quickly turned into an obsession.

I've always been artsy, and I love working with my hands and digging in the dirt (gardening), but as soon as I'd built my first little pixie house I knew that I'd found my calling. It was cute, but not too sappy. Detailed, but not too busy. Whimsical, but not too silly. Kind of like me!

It satisfies the hobbyist in me by giving me detailed work to master in various disciplines (mold making, casting, construction, painting, etc.) in order to achieve the best final product. It satisfies the designer in me as I get to conceive, plan and build virtually anything that I can imagine. And it satisfies the artist in me, giving me licence to create whole new worlds with each project, evoking a range of emotions in the viewer. For me, at least, it's been the perfect outlet to fill that creative niche in my life.

I didn't expect my tiny gardens and houses to bring smiles to so many people, but they have. In real life and on Social Media (Facebook, Pinterest) the response to my work has been so gratifying and encouraging. So I've committed myself to this tiny (pun intended) endeavor in the hopes that it can continue to bring joy to all involved, including myself!

So my life now revolves around these few things: Family (including dogs!), Friends and Fairy Houses. Please join me and let's make some miniature magic!

Additional Note concerning the two types of ceramic clay that we use in our studio.
I use a white porcelain clay with grogg, which is primarily bone dry clay that is ground up and added to a porcelain clay body. When fired to a cone 6, the clay then becomes vitrified and is able to withstand extremes in temperature and is almost completely impermeable to water.
My husband uses a white stoneware clay that is fired to a cone 6 as well, and because of that, the vitrification process is almost the same as for porcelain clay, thus making is able to withstand extreme temperatures.
The glazes and underglazes we use are lead free and are non-toxic.

Below you will find an excerpt from Wikipedia talking about the Vitrification of a clay body.
The link to read more is below the excerpt.

"Vitrification is the progressive partial fusion of a clay, or of a body, as a result of a firing process. As vitrification proceeds the proportion of glassy bond increases and the apparent porosity of the fired product becomes progressively lower. Vitreous bodies have open porosity, and may be either opaque or translucent. In this context 'zero porosity'; may be defined as less than 1% water absorption. However, various standard procedures define the conditions of water absorption. An example is by ASTM, who state "The term vitreous generally signifies less than 0.5% absorption. except for floor and wall tile and low-voltage electrical insulators which are considered vitreous up to 3% water absorption."

"Glazing alone does not make pottery impermeable to water. PORCELAIN, bone china and dinnerware are examples of vitrified pottery, and are impermeable even without glaze. STONEWARE may be vitrified or semi-vitrified, the latter type would not be impermeable without glaze."
