Petticoat Jane for well-made one off clothes and crafts with friendly service

Petticoat Jane started with a coat and a nightgown!
5 years ago I could not find a winter coat that matched my specification, so I decided to make one. I have been sewing as long as I can remember having learnt at my mother’s knee as they say. Anyway, my friends loved my coat and reckoned I could sell coats like these. When strangers in the street stopped me and asked where I had got my coat I thought that maybe my friends had a point. Two years later in 2011, I opened my first shop Petticoat Jane Vintage selling vintage and retro clothes and in 2012 I opened my new shop, Petticoat Jane so I could concentrate on my one off quality handmade clothes.
Were you wondering how I chose my shop name? Well, I shall tell you. It is a play on my name, Jane and was inspired by my grandma who’s aunt ran a stall on Petticoat Lane and helped out my great grandma by sending clothes for her 13 children and so Petticoat Jane was born.
What about the nightdress, I hear you ask? Well, I made a nightdress for myself out of cotton fabric and embroidered organza to wear when l went into hospital. It made me feel good and I am sure it helped my recovery. I wanted other people to feel good in the clothes they wear, so the first item I made for my shop was a nightdress and peignoir.
One of my first customers left me a wonderful review when she said “Oh, this peignoir is absolutely, gloriously beautiful! Thank you for such amazing craftsmanship! The sewing is perfect! I cannot thank you enough for this stunning creation!”
When I read her feedback, I knew that I have achieved my aim to make quality clothes that make people feel special.
I know you will understand when I confide in you that I have been disappointed in the passed when I have purchased mass produced clothes to find that they last hardly any time at all. I like clothes that last and I take pride in creating beautiful clothes with a feminine vintage twist. I ensure the clothes I make have generous seam allowances so they don't split and are hand finished to ensure quality.
I have always loved vintage clothes, their finishing and fabric is better than we get today, but am always worried about damaging them. So only wear vintage on special occasions. I love vintage style and so started to make vintage inspired clothes using my massive vintage pattern collection and my history of fashion books for inspiration under my Petticoat Jane label. I source vintage fabrics and notions for my clothes designs, which make them unique one-offs and by using vintage fabrics I am recycling and re-using.
One of my proudest moments was when a customer contacted me to place a custom order for a special Edwardian skirt that she could cycle in at a vintage bicycle day at the Beamish Museum in the UK. I recycled a vintage burgundy door curtain to make her a skirt in authentic period style with vintage hooks and eyes at the closure. It looked beautiful. After the event she messaged me to tell me that she had had a wonderful day and the skirt had made her feel special. She sent me a picture of herself with her vintage bicycle featured on the front cover of the Vintage Cycle Club magazine.
Protecting our environment is important to me, so I like to re-cycle and re-use where I can. As well as using vintage patterns, vintage fabrics and vintage notions in my designs, I re-use and recycle packaging, boxes and envelopes to post items to my customers and would encourage everyone to do the same.
Last year, my daughter joined me, making and selling her unique young fashion designs under her FrannB Designs label. She wanted to make some money to support her through 6th form. She has just finished her studies including product design and loves designing and creating dresses.
With FrannB Designs encouragement we have diversified into vintage style crafts including candles, Christmas decorations, children’s crafts and moth repellent herbal lavender bags to protect your clothes. We try to use natural and recycled products where possible that will not harm the environment.
Finally, but most importantly ensuring our customers get a friendly and rewarding shopping experience is important to us. Therefore, we make the following promises to you.
• We will endeavor to answer questions within 24 hours.
• We aim to pack and post prêt a porter items within 3 to 5 days of receiving an order.
• We will agree a production time on custom made orders with customers that is achievable.
• We will always respond to complaints and reach an amicable solution with our customers.
