Why Cloth Diaper?

There are a multitude of reasons for using cloth diapers on your child. Every family will have different reasons for cloth diapering and not every reason will apply to every family. Cloth diapering is a very personal decision, right down to why you choose to do so, whether you cloth diaper full time or only some of the time, and what types of diapers you decide to use.

Cloth diapers have a lower negative impact on our environment than disposable diapers.

The number of disposable diapers going into our landfills is simply staggering and, with populations increasing, those numbers are climbing higher and higher. By using cloth diapers, an average family can cut their waste output almost in half. Not only are disposable diapers taking up space in our landfills (for up to 500 years, it is estimated!) those diapers are filled with raw, untreated sewage and chemicals such as sodium polyacrylate and dioxin.

Cloth diapers, on the other hand, can be reused for years. Many diaper makers are also incorporating fabrics that are certified Organic, meaning that growing and manufacturing of the raw materials used for these fabrics were done in such a way as to have far less negative impact on our environment than traditional fabrics do. Once a cloth diaper is no longer fit to use as a diaper, it can be recycled in various ways, most popularly as a household rag, depending on the type of diaper. When families use cloth diapers, human excrement goes where it belongs—to waste treatment plants.

Cloth diapers are much more economical than disposable diapers.

Possibly the number one reason families choose to cloth diaper is the fact that the economical difference between cloth and disposable is considerable. The type of diapering system you choose will impact how great that difference is. A simple prefold/waterproof cover system will be one of the cheapest, while using exclusively AIOs will be more costly; either system will still be cheaper than disposables! Fitted diapers with covers, pocket diapers and AI2s will generally fit into the middle range on the cloth diaper price scale.

Cloth diapers are much better for a baby’s skin than disposable diapers.

Diaper rash is such a commonplace affliction in a baby’s life. It shouldn’t be and doesn't need to be! Cloth diapers are breathable and chemical free and the result is far fewer rashes and skin sensitivities for babies. These benefits are are often another important factor in families switching from disposables to cloth.

Cloth diapers are much more comfortable than disposable diapers.

Which would you prefer, to wear chemical-laden paper and plastic all day and night or to have luxuriously soft fabrics cushioning your behind?

Cloth diapers are as simple as disposable diapers.

Many families still picture large white rectangles of fabric, rubber pants and wicked looking pins when they think about cloth diapering. Cloth diapers have been revolutionized in recent years and are simple to change, wash and store.

CLOTH MENSTRUAL PADS: INFORMATION

Care Instructions

Store soiled pads in a diaper pail along with your child’s cloth diapers, or in a wetbag. If you’re just using pads for light incontinence or daily freshness, they can just go straight into the hamper with the rest of your dirty laundry. You can rinse soiled pads by hand before storing them until they are washed, but it is not at all necessary. I recommend washing used pads at least every three days.

All Pianissimo Cloth Pads are machine washable and can be dried on medium heat.

Begin with a cold rinse cycle to remove the majority of the menstrual blood. Follow this with a full cycle on hot, using ¼ to ½ of your regular amount of detergent. Run an additional cold rinse cycle and line dry or put in the dryer on medium heat. Ideal detergents do not contain fragrance, dyes or enzymes. Do not use chlorine bleach or most fabric softeners. The easiest way to wash cloth pads is to simply add them to your load of cloth diapers! The wash routine should be the same, or very similar. Not washing cloth diapers? Put your pads alone through a cold rinse cycle, then add a load of towels and wash on hot, followed by an extra rinse.

Over time, pads will lose some of their softness. A small amount of plant based fabric softener may be added to your wash routine, restoring the softness to the fabric. It is very important to use a natural fabric softener. Traditional fabric softeners are loaded with unhealthy chemicals and will coat the surface of your fabrics, making them repel water. Some natural fabric softeners you can use are Ecover and Natureclean.

If you have had a yeast infection it is necessary to strip your pads. Hot water is the most effective tool when stripping or sanitizing pads. Temporarily turn your water heater up to its highest setting. (Don't forget to turn it back down!) If this is not possible, add kettles of boiling water to your machine. The water should be at least 122°F. To strip, add a small amount of Dawn dishwashing detergent and wash the pads on a full wash cycle. Rinse on cold until the water runs clear. Dawn is a very high sudsing detergent, so please err on the side of caution. You can always add more Dawn if needed. With front loading washing machines in particular, it is very important to add only a very small amount of Dawn, or to avoid stripping altogether. To sterilize your pads add oxygen bleach to your hottest wash cycle and let the pads soak for 2 hours. Rinse twice on cold. Never use chlorine bleach, as chlorine is very damaging to textiles. Please note that the above instructions should not be a part of your regular wash routine, but as extra care in dealing with yeast infections.

Which size cloth pad is best suited for which purpose will vary from woman to woman, as we are all unique and have unique needs. Pads 10” or longer come in two different sizes – Size 1 for women who wear underwear/clothing in the XS, S or M range, and Size 2 for women who wear underwear/clothing in M, L, XL or bigger sizes. These are just guidelines. The difference between the sizes is mainly in the width of the pad. Some smaller women have found that they prefer pads that are wider, while some larger women have decided they prefer a more narrow pad, so the sizes can be interchangeable for many wearers. The Size 1 and Size 2 based on clothing size is designed to correspond with the average crotch width of women’s underwear, but since this varies greatly between panty styles I will again stress that these are just guidelines.

Usage and Care Instructions

Fitted diapers are meant to be worn underneath a waterproof cover made from fabrics such as PUL, wool or fleece. However, many families use fitted diapers without a cover. Pianissimo Cloth Fitted Diapers are designed to enable babies to go without a cover for long periods of time before the outer fabric begins to feel damp, and to keep absorbing all night when paired with a cover.

All fabrics used in Pianissimo Cloth Fitted Diapers have been prewashed to minimize shrinkage. Once you’ve inspected your new diaper for defects, please wash and dry before using. Expect your diaper to reach peak absorbency after several cycles of washing and drying. Fabrics such as cotton and bamboo contain natural oils which hamper absorbency; once they have been washed out your diaper will be fully absorbent. As an added precaution, please wash your bright and dark coloured diapers separately, or with a load of dark clothing the first time or two. This is not necessary once the diapers have been prepped.

I recommend washing in hot water, using ¼ to ½ of your regular amount of detergent and drying on medium heat. Ideal detergents do not contain fragrance, dyes or enzymes. Do not use chlorine bleach or most fabric softeners. Do not use traditional diaper creams or salves with your PC Fitteds. Look for a rash cream that specifically mentions that it is safe for use with cloth diapers. There are plenty of choices, as more and more companies are offering this option. Bum Bum Balm™ was our personal favourite.

General Cloth Diaper Usage

Many people are intimidated by the idea of caring for cloth diapers, but it’s really quite simple and not a lot of extra time is required.

In between washings, store used diapers in an airtight pail. Solids should be shaken off into the toilet before the dirty diaper is placed in the pail. There is absolutely no need to dunk and swish diapers until every last trace of excrement has disappeared. Most inner fabrics of cloth diapers readily release solids, and many families find that an inexpensive, easy to install diaper sprayer removes any stubborn remnants. The bowel movements of exclusively breastfed infants are water soluble and can go straight into the diaper pail with the soiled diaper.

How often you wash diapers will depend on how many diapers you own and how many children are using them. It is not recommended that you go longer than 3 days between washings. On wash day, simply dump the contents of the diaper pail into the washing machine. Run a cold rinse cycle to remove the majority of the dirt. Follow this with a full cycle on hot, using ¼ to ½ of your regular amount of detergent. Run an additional cold rinse cycle and line dry or put the diapers in the dryer on medium heat.

Additional Cloth Diaper Care

Over time, diapers will lose some of their softness. A small amount of plant based fabric softener may be added to your wash routine, restoring the softness to the fabric. Some natural fabric softeners you can use are Ecover and Natureclean.

If you buy used diapers, if your diapers are retaining an odor, or if your child has been sick or had a yeast infection it may be necessary to strip your diapers. Hot water is the most effective tool when stripping or sanitizing diapers. Temporarily turn your water heater up to its highest setting. (Don't forget to turn it back down!) If this is not possible, add kettles of boiling water to your machine. The water should be at least 122°F. To sterilize your diapers add oxygen bleach to your hottest wash cycle and let the diapers soak for 2 hours. Rinse twice on cold. Never use chlorine bleach, as chlorine is very damaging to textiles. Please note that the above instructions should not be a part of your regular wash routine, but as extra care in specific circumstances such as receiving used diapers or dealing with infections or viral illness.
