Block print & love

We are Fabrizio and Serena, two Roman creatives who in 2018 gave life to a linocut and block print project: the Piccola Stamperia Clandestina.

Our name reflects everything we want to be, that is a small printing activity that goes beyond the concept of conventional, and that allows us to express ourselves at our best, fully exploiting all our creativity.

We both come from the world of communication and are strongly passionate about illustration, art and contemporary culture. Not always, in our daily life, we manage to bring out everything that goes through our heads. With the Piccola Stamperia Clandestina we want to give the possibility to our imagination to have no limits.

The idea of putting on this project came to us after a beautiful trip to India, where we learned the art of block print unknown to us. We were so fascinated by the printing results, the variety of shapes and inks, the craftsmanship of the process and the skill of the printers, that we wanted to replicate this technique once we returned home.

Today we practice the engraving art of linocut, that is, we handcraft the printing matrices through the carving of linoleum. We start from original illustrations, drawn by hand or digitally, we create the plates, ink them and use them for printing on paper that takes place either manually (through a tool called baren), or thanks to the use of a chalcographic press.

Creating a print takes us several days of work, but the result is crazy and every time it leaves us amazed. Each piece is unique in that the artisanal printing process does not allow to have two identical jobs. It is precisely in the details the particularity of this process, which moves away from the precision and cleanliness of digital printing, to land in the imperfect and wonderful world of block printing.

With the Piccola Stamperia Clandestina we tell our social and cultural world, what we are passionate about and what strikes us, everything that stimulates our creativity or that represents a point of reflection. We want to describe, through our prints, the beauty of a controversial world, often not so easy to grasp, but that lurks everywhere, even in the simplest things. And that for us it is essential to share, every day.
