Bob Brocken FIsh Maker
I've been making ceramic fish for about 10 years. I was working in the corporate world and was burning out, so I started working for a friends' family ceramic tile business. I loved working with clay and the forms. They made relief tiles and also ceramic fish and I was enamored with the process so I began making forms on my own.
I cast real fish in plaster to make a template and press clay in. Then, I take the clay form out and trim it and add details like, gills, fins, eyes, teeth and some surface texture. After the clay dries completely, I bisque fire it in an electric kiln to completely dry out and harden the form.
Then the fun starts and I brush on the glazes in layers to give the fish a sometimes realistic and more often , "Artistic" appearance after it is fired in the kiln a second time to melt the glazes.
I was always fascinated with fish and as a child made frequent visits to the Shedd Aquarium from our suburban Chicago home. I would take the "L" downtown with my family and I could name virtually every fish in the place. Now, I still love learning about the different species of fish and also about ceramics and the endless variables involved with clay, glaze, firings...
I have a studio in Lowertown St. Paul, MN which is a fun a vibrant arts community. I also have a home studio as I am the primary caregiver to two pre school aged children so I work when I can!
I currently have over 100 forms and am always adding more. If you have any questions, please contact me.

I'll include insurance on any item over one hundred dollars in my shipping and handling fees. If for some reason you want insurance on a smaller item, please contact me.
Per the Post office insurance policies, You need to take the insurance receipt and the broken item WITH the packaging to your post office. At this time you should receive a return for your item.
If in case of an accident to the fish, I will send you the receipt and insurance receipt with a claim form when you contact me. It is up to you to proceed with the claim.
