Simple story

I started up my shop from a princes trust loan and a credit card(i know, bad way to start). I had limited funding so personally made most of the fittings and required tools needed to silk screen onto t-shirts. After getting some practise (i was rusty as i only had some simple skills), i felt comfortable that the quality was god enough and so i started about creating the brand 'Plain Bear'. At first it was only going to be the logo and nothing else but i noticed that most t-shirts are crammed with text and very high detail images. So i felt there was a gap in the market for simple and bold designs and then also decided that no text shall be placed on the t-shirt (felt that the design should speak for its self). With some friends, we managed to come up with a handful of t-shirt designs and the rest is history
To do a silk screen onto a t-shirt it is all rather simple. The main problem is just practise in lining up, timing and curing the paint. First you have to 'burn' (create a negative image) an image onto an emulsion (light sensitive chemical) of which is on the screen. After washing and drying this screen you then line up on the silk screen machine (basic clamp). Then you can choose your colour of t-shirt, size, and colour of image to go on. You place the paint onto the screen, press the screen firmly onto the pallet of which the t-shirt sits. Grab a squeegee (paint scraping thing) and run the paint over the negative image. The paint shall then be pressed through the screen onto the t-shirt. You then have to curer (dry) the paint. This has to be at a particular height and time, get it wrong and the quality of the image and t-shirt is compromised without even being able to tell. If all this goes well, pack and post it to your loving customer

Hope this explains all :)

I started Plain Bear after coming out of university with a sculpture fine art degree but found it difficult to get a job. Starting up my own business and working for my self was the best decision and I relish the challenges this business brings.

Plain Bear has a simple concept that t-shirts can be unique and bold to bring a sense of individualism to every wearer. Our designs are shaped by abstracted imagination, which allows each image to have a crisp feel of visual pleasure. Each Designer brings their own touch and Plain Bear allows young budding artists to showcase their own styles and develop a name for themselves. We only use top quality t-shirts (American Apparel) and all t-shirts are printed by hand for that personal effect.
