The Popflux Story
For nearly 20 years I worked professionally as a videogame producer and technical project manager. When the economy turned for the worst for me last year, I found myself out of work and harder than ever to return. Between interviewing and looking for work, I came to find a small pottery studio in Long Beach, CA - Clay's on First.
There I studied pottery, slip casting, and ceramic firing. After continuing my education with classes and YouTube-filled nights, I became fascinated with pottery. The parent design of Meowchow bowls started there at Clay’s. Early prototypes were very cute, but were too small and not very practical to manufacture, but the idea was clear and original.
In late 2011 I expanded my operation to a shared one-car garage. There I increased the size and volume of the bowls while improving their manufacturability, functionality, and look. After designing and testing several generations, I believe I arrived at the right design.
I sincerely hope that you will love Meowchow Bowls. I’ve worked very hard to achieve the best unique design for your pet. I chose to perform this work myself and not manufacture overseas, I hope to provide meaningful work for myself, and to create jobs here in Los Angeles where jobs are so desperately needed.

Owner, Maker, Designer
Welcome to Popflux! I am Mark Mermelstein, the artist behind Meowchow bowls and Popflux Ceramic. Originally raised in New York, I’ve called Los Angeles home since 2003.
All of the items you'll see in my shop I personally craft in a one-car garage in Long Beach, CA. I hope to grow my business to provide needed jobs here in the USA!
I only use certified non-toxic materials (absolutely no lead or any harmful chemicals). All of my products are both food and dishwasher safe.
My ceramics are made with exceptionally pure and durable Laguna brand porcelain, and Amaco brand underglazes. I double–fire my ceramic goods over 2200°F making them durable as any plate or bowl.
