About

Pandemonic noise...the short and the long of it...

It was at the Festival of Speed 2005 in the idyllic setting of Goodwood House, East Sussex in the UK where I first met a Formula 1 Racing car. The future 2009 World Champion Jenson Button was firing his Honda up the famous Goodwood Hill Climb. He stopped in front of the house to do a bit of showing off and the pandemonic noise he made doing donuts and burnouts in that vivacious, sleek car not only quite possibly did permanent damage to my hearing but started a passion for the incredible machine that is the Formula 1 racing car. I had never seen anything like it before!

That was the jumping off point for one of the inspirations behind my jewellery, a machine so complex and unique that no two of them are ever exactly alike from race to race. I set about photographing them, drawing them and looking very carefully whenever the opportunity arose to see how they are made inside.

The F1 car was a start for my inspiration but it needed a counterpoint, something to bump against to create the aesthetic for my jewellery. A visit to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London initially to see their fashion section turned into an epic sketching session in the Japanese Gallery. The kimono patterns and fabrics they have there blew me away, so perfect and so gorgeous and so complex. I had my counterpoint inspiration.

Mixing these two influences created my visual language. I blended my signature photo-inlay technique based on F1 manufacture with a style based on F1 car parts and Japanese repeated geometry with a lavish use of colour. I continue to revel in creating layers of meaning and technique in the jewellery I make"

My Signature Photo-Inlay Technique

I use a technique I have developed to partly lacquer and partly inlay a silvered photograph into sheet titanium using resin in a process inspired by the lay up of carbon fibre in Formula 1 car design. The titanium is anodised (electrically coloured) then use my technique to create a jewel from a photograph, the end effect is a little like a butterfly's wing.

Layering of meaning and technique is integral to my work. For the inlay I choose parts of the photographs I take of Formula 1 cars which are then transformed into a digital photo-paintings based on the sounds I record of the car's engine.
