    Where light comes to life

At Portraitinglass we believe that a face tells the story of someone's life and that this story is never easily retold by any artist. It requires a real effort and know-how of portraiture, material and light to get a face just right. Glass is not an easy nor an obvious material for a portrait, but we believe it is the most beautiful. The light shines right through, giving the glass portrait an unparalleled sense of depth. As the light changes, so does the portrait, which adds to its liveliness. We think of each portrait as a gem. Just a bit bigger and flatter :)

With a background in architectural glass (BA), I have always looked for ways to connect living spaces with light through glass art. Rather than using large glass designs with candy colors, I make intimate designs where the light can play freely.

    Sizing details

Standard sized portraits are 6 x 2 x 9 inches (16 x 5 x 23 cm). This includes the wood stand which measures 5.5 x 2 x 1.2 inches. We make custom sized portraits, stands and frames on request.

    Care instructions

The backside of the glass is engraved with the portrait. To protect the engraving from dust and fingerprints, its surface is treated with an invisible polymer layer. You can clean the portrait carefully with a lint free cloth (e.g. microfibre), using a non-caustic cleaning agent.

When moving the portrait always use both hands. Lift the wooden stand with one hand and hold the glass in place with the other hand.

Place the portrait out of the way of personal movement and the wind. A portrait is for indoor enjoyment. We don't recommend outdoor use.

    Custom and personalized orders

We like a challenge and so we cheer for custom orders. The photo design, glass application and finish can be adapted to your specifications. For example, we can add brief texts on the glass, bend the glass (so it stands on its own) or place the portraits on a stainless steel stand. Please ask and we will try to make it happen.

Click on the {Custom order form} button to attach your photo and describe your custom request.

What's the difference between crystal clear and Tint glass portraits?

The difference is in the color and the contrast of the image.

Crystal clear glass is very transparant glass. One side is streaky, giving it a lively, faceted look in passing by. The streakiness is not very obvious due to the engraving, but just enough to give the edge some extra zing.

Tint glass got its lovely redness in the glass kiln. Engraving removes the red to reveal a white. The added contrast between the colors makes the portrait stand up to bright light (e.q. a clear sky) somewhat better than crystal clear glass.

Be aware that all portraits require against a somewhat darker background for a proper display.

Can I trace the package in the mail?

Yes, Portaitinglass will e-mail you a track and trace number, when it applies for your country.

What if my portrait is damaged during shipping?

If your item is damaged during shipping, please send a photograph of the damage and we will make replacement arrangements. Please report damage within three days of receiving your item.

What is a portrait in glass?

Your photo is transferred to glass in two steps. First, a halftone design is made. Second, we engrave the design through sandblasting.

The spacing between dots of the halftone design creates natural-looking tones and shades from a viewing distance of 1,5 metres (5 feet) and further. Only from up close will you see individual dots.

The great advantage of a halftone on glass is twofold. It faithfully reproduces the details of the original photo, while preserving the transparency of the glass. This illuminates the portrait in a way not found in laser engraved or powder painted portraits. This results in unmatched liveliness and brightness of the portrait.

    Custom and personalized orders

All portraits are custom-made and one-offs. You will get the best product that can be expected from a handmade product. Please accept minor changes between design and glass portrait. Errors are automatically rejected. Colors -especially with Tint glass- may vary. This is due to monitor settings and/or kiln firing which gives slightly varying results. Wood type and color changes per order, due to the selective nature of its resourcing. Please indicate your preferred wood color when placing your order.

    Custom and personalized orders

We use the photo provided by you to make the requested portrait in glass. The photo will be deleted after completion of your order.

We do use finished portraits for publicity (e.g. our website and social medias sites), unless you request otherwise while ordering a portrait.
