Michelle Post has been creating her original print editions via wood engraving, linocuts and reduction linocuts since 1976. The Trenton, NJ born artist apprenticed with renowned wood engraver Stefan Martin and has since carried on the tradition of this intricate and finely detailed art form. Her style combines the linear qualities of the past with the creative freedom of the present and comes to life in her choice of personal subject matter.
Wood engraving was the major form of illustrative reproduction for the print media
prior to the turn of the century. Between 1860 and 1880 virtually every book, news paper and magazine utilized wood engravings because of their tonal quality and pictorial capabilities. With the invention of photo-engraving and offset printing, both of which employed half-tone reproduction, wood engraving quickly became yet another relic of a bygone era.
The majority of "art" prints available in today's market are reproduced by the very methods that made wood engraving obsolete. In a poignant reversal, wood engraving has emerged as one of the few print mediums that offers collectors "original" artwork.
Fortunately, wood engraving has survived primarily through the efforts of a few
dedicated artists who fervently practice this age-old craft. Today, thanks to their commitment, it is still possible to enjoy this rare and original art form.
