Shop Name Change and My Story...

I will be changing the name of my shop because my favorite porcelain clay was discontinued. Yes, I could buy a different porcelain elsewhere, but I really like buying from American Art Clay. They have been in the Indy area for over 100 years and I really want to continue supporting this local business.! So, I will be switching to a very white, grog free stoneware. The finished look should be very similar to what I have now and I am excited about the change as much as I am sad to see the old clay go.
So, be on the lookout for the name change!

I recently moved my pottery wheel into my house from it's former place in the garage. I did this because the garage was always too cold or too hot, and there were spiders, lots of spiders. (I really dislike spiders.) It's also much more convenient to have the wheel in my living room! I can bounce back and forth from artistic and domestic projects, the chickens don't follow me around begging for food, and I get clay all over the house. Okay, so maybe that last thing isn't so great, but it's totally worth it. And...I mentioned the spiders, right?
I throw all my work on my oh so conveniently located pottery wheel. After they are leather hard the foot ring is trimmed at the base and they are either set out to dry or I begin carving or piercing them. Some pieces can take days to make and often I have to leave them wrapped up in plastic while I go gallivanting around the country.
After the first firing, which still takes place in the garage, I sketch in pencil on pieces that will have a design painted on. Then I can carefully paint on the under glaze which is followed by the glaze itself. Solid colored pieces are glazed, and when everything is dry, they are ready to be fired again. This firing is the Final one, and when the pieces come out, they will be finished.
This is the only time you can't keep me out of the garage. It's like Christmas morning. I just can't wait to open that kiln! But I must resist! The kiln must be room temperature before it can be opened. So every few minutes, I check on it. Ready yet? No. How about now? No. Now? Yes. Finally! It took f o r e v e r ! Okay, it only takes about 24 hours, but still.
At this point I can unload the kiln and photograph the results for my etsy page. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do every time I open my kiln. :)
