About

A Modern Revival of American Heritage

THE PRAIRIE

"…the joy of prairie lies in its subtlety. It is so easy—too easy—to be swept away by mountain and ocean vistas. A prairie, on the other hand, requests the favor of your closer attention. It does not divulge itself to mere passersby."
- Suzanne Winckler

Yes, the name "Prairie Bungalow" was selected with a purpose in mind. Sure, it's kinda catchy and it's related to my style of art. But there's much more. It reflects a place, a landscape, an ecosystem, a definitive style of architecture, and a lifestyle. Most importantly, the name reflects a philosophy and state of mind.

THE HISTORY

For the last ten years I have had an interest in the Arts and Crafts Era and the distinctive artistic styles and designs from that time. This era spans the late 1800's through the late 1920's. The Arts and Crafts Style has become very popular again and is experiencing a "revival", especially among people who live in or are remodeling older American homes.

I began with large poster style watercolor images capturing agricultural icons from Northern California. These works included decorative borders and typology consistent with Arts and Crafts.

A second phase of work included the development of numerous linoleum block prints with both iconic and local images reflecting the arts and crafts era.

The most recent work incorporates linoleum block printing techniques applied to clay to make decorative tile. The tile making process includes the "cuerda seca" technique used my the historic Malibu Tile Company and others in the 1920's. The entire process from wet clay to final kiln firing is done in my studio.

THE STUDIO

Is Prairie Bungalow really on the prairie? Yes! The central valley of California is also defined as prairie. Our home and my studio is located in the northern Sacramento Valley, surrounded by orchards. Just 2 miles to our east, the orchards disappear and there is nothing but grasslands. We can see for hundreds of unobstructed miles in any direction. These grasslands are dissected by major rivers, braided creeks and wetlands. We are on the same prairie that was inhabited by antelope, elk, and grizzly bears before agriculture moved in. Grasslands, horizon, and sky. This is where I make my art.

Thank you for visiting the Prairie Bungalow! I hope you found just the right item for your home or a gift for someone special. All of my products are original designs and are hand made by me, Dave Simcox. I make every effort to assure quality images, prints, and tiles consistent with the design styles and principles of the Arts and Crafts Era.

All of my items are hand made and are typically started from scratch when your order is received, with the exception of Giclee prints. I will make every attempt to have your order to you in a short time frame, but many factors influence the timing including unavailablity of materials, drying time for clay based items, and number of orders at any given time.

My Etsy Manager, Ciara Barsotti (of Scoutaroo Paper Co: https://www.etsy.com/shop/ScoutarooPaperCo), will respond to all orders and inquiries in the mornings and evenings Monday through Saturday.

AVERAGE WAIT TIME ← Please read carefully before placing your order!

Block prints take an average of 3-4 weeks to complete from start to finish, as each print is hand pulled and then hand painted.

Tiles take an average of 6 weeks to complete from start to finish. Each tile is hand-pressed, fired in my own kiln, and then glazed.
