The card is lovely, I love the design and the beautiful letterpressing; and the teal colour is a perfect match for my friends' wedding colour!

About

Making roots in paper and ink.

Hello. I’m Rachel.

I was born with itchy feet. My tenth move was from Vancouver to London. On this particular move I decided I’d had enough. I wanted a home. I yearned to sink both feet deeply into the ground beneath me for long enough that they would begin to sprout roots.

Then a boy bought me an 8x5 Adana letterpress. We learnt about letterpress and printed our first greetings cards, now fondly call “The Christmas cards of Death”.

Letterpress dates back to the fifteenth century. It is an old, tactile craft that requires time, focus and skill to design and typeset faultlessly, master the machinery and produce a perfect print. Each piece of card is fed through the press, piled, cut and enveloped by hand. The result is something you will instantly want to stroke, collect, frame or gift away.

So, I made my hobby into a business.
I named the letterpress after the boy.
I named the business after the press.
I quit my job.
I married the boy.
I put down roots.

I bought a gigantic press: an 8x12 Chandler & Price treadle press and named her Gee Gee, after my grandparents. Gee Gee is about a hundred years old and she will outlive me. She sits firmly on my studio floor. I’m afraid I’ll either never manage to shift her or she’ll crash through the ceiling! Either way we aren’t moving anywhere in a hurry. Prickle (boy and press), Gee Gee and I are firmly rooted here in Brixton.

As a child I used to collect shells. Then stamps. Then coins. These unfinished collections are gathering dust in my attic. But above my desk a collection of clippings, photos and cards I’ve carried with me over the years continues to grow. Some have been stamped and ‘snail mailed’ to scattered friends but the leftovers tell a story and inspires me everyday. I have a decade-old magazine clipping of oak tree leaves that vividly brings back the smell of our childhood garden in Italy; a postcard of Picasso’s “Le Bouquet” that reminds me of the importance of saying thank you even in the smallest way; and an inspirational quote from Roald Dahl.

Prickle Press designs are an extension of my collection. My pen and ink sketches are inspired by little unassuming objects, characters, colours or stories I stumble across in my day-to-day life and make me smile.

I chose the most luxurious and forest-friendly papers, envelopes and inks and turn my favourite sketches into beautiful letterpress prints and stationery that are worth gifting or framing. Whether it’s a simple print or bespoke wedding invitations, I design every piece to tell a story that will outlive us both.

The Prickle Press family is small so we would love you to join in and share your love of snail mail and all things paper and letterpress. You can start by signing up for our newsletter, buying a card to send to a long lost friend, a print for an empty wall in your new home or having some stationery made just for you.

    Copywriter

Hi. I'm Sally, Prickle Press' trusty copywriter. One long, tiring car ride back from the highlands of Scotland, Rachel decided, with complete blind-faith, to make me her copywriter. I do all sorts, email sally.louise.marshall@gmail.com :)

Manufacturers
  • RIPE digital

    Bath, England, United Kingdom

I chose RIPE digital because the quality of their paper and printing meant that my designs have been reproduced with such a close likeness to the originals. Their advice and support have helped me grow my business and product range.

  • A Local printer

    Storrington, England, United Kingdom

I chose to work with A Local Printer on my gift wrap because my letterpress won't print large format and I wanted to expand my range. The quality of their paper and printing, service and experience printing eco-friendly products have been invaluable.
