I have been rug hooking since 1989, when a friend said, “Would you like to try rug hooking?” Little did I know!! We took many classes together and it truly became a part of our lives. At the same time, I was raising a family with my husband and teaching school, 5th grade Reading and English. This craft became my relaxation, creative outlet, and “therapy”. I really think it is good for blood pressure!!

I am now retired from teaching since 2015. My husband and I live “up north” in a quiet part of Minnesota on 2 and ½ acres. I have my wool studio, he has his workshop. We love it here!
I believe that all the skills in arts and crafts, sewing, design etc. that my mother and friends taught me when I was young and later as I raised my family, were preparation for what I love doing now every day!

I love rug hooking and it has become a very creative outlet for me. As a designer and teacher I have read some interesting historical perspectives on this primitive art. Most rug hooking authorities agree that rug hooking was functional and utilitarian; it not only made use of leftover scraps of material and old clothing, but also added warmth and beauty to the home. There is disagreement about the origin of the craft. Some believe it started in Egypt while others believe it originated in the 18th or 19th century in Europe.

Two important parts of designing and hooking rugs, for me, are the expression of our ideas and the telling of our life stories. As we evolve into hookers, we may feel the need to tell our own stories with our rugs; family history, pets, or homes we’ve lived in and our favorite places. You can do this with your own designs or with the designs of others, that “speak to you” when you see them!
