STORY AND REVIEWS OF PAUL N PRINCE's Unique World of Intricate Wood Boxes, Housewares and Jewelry

PrinceWoodArt Shop on Etsy is Home of Unique Exotic Hardwood Gifts, Inlay Boxes, Miniature Instrument Jewelry and Colorful Drink Coasters.
I highlight exotic wood's natural colors and figured grains in designs that are aesthetically pleasing and functional. I enjoy making different types of projects from jewelry and small personal boxes, to miniature instrument earrings and necklaces, unique pyramids and custom work.
The wood art I make is inspired by the natural beauty and color of the wood, architecture, Baroque instrument inlay techniques, geometric mosaic designs and ornate marquetry borders. 38 Years of woodworking have given me skills and appreciation for the beauty of exotic woods, allowing me to fuse centuries of art styles into a cohesive new synergy of form and function. I try to reinvent box making by incorporating intricate marquetry inlays, Japanese and African influenced design motifs, and unusual pyramids made from colorful, iridescent grained hardwoods.
THE WOODS I USE:
Some of the most beautiful woods are figured walnut, quilted maple, curly purple heart, eucalyptus, curly koa and mango. These are woods that have fantastic colors and grain figure, causing them to reflect and refract light in unusual and rhythmic ways. The complex depth and shimmering grain of these figured woods adds another dimension to pieces, and when carefully finished, provides an elegant, timeless beauty to a piece, which can inspire wonder.
Highly figured grains seem to create a kind of tactile / visual connection that makes people want to touch the piece and look "into" the wood's figure, making them perfect gifts. Tiger or curly maple for instance, which had its peak usage in Colonial furniture and musical instruments of the 1800s, is one of my favorite woods. It was chosen especially for violins, and its still a favorite of guitar makers. Maple's tiger stripe is a type of "distortion" of the growth fibers, and is known to be created in the wood's growth cycle, but it does not occur in every maple, and the exact mechanism that causes these iridescent grain patterns to be created is a mystery, a mystery that is central to my focus. I was once told that in the case of Hawaiian koa, the curl was the result of the wind bending the tree. I try to highlight these grain effects occurring in different woods by using contrast, repetition, intricate geometric inlay and meticulous finishing.

My job is to create fine woodworking pieces that inspire wonder and conversation, yet are enjoyable to use, making people happy with colorful, one of a kind wood art possessing artistic design functionality and even personality. My interest in music is reflected in a set of miniature musical instrument jewelry I have made including marimba and mbira necklaces and earrings made of polished colorful woods like curly purple heart. These seem to actually inspire conversations because their unique look and playfulness.
I hope you enjoy visiting my shop and find something of special. If you are interested in ordering a one of the boxes or pieces in my shop and want to see if it can be customized, please contact me and we can discuss your idea if it is based upon the type work I do and then I can let you know the availability and cost.
Thank you !

"I LOVE my Paul Prince handmade custom wood box.The process of ordering from him is so easy, my box was ready within a week! We were able to go through every detail I wanted. He showed me his current catalog of beautiful exotic woods and I hand selected EACH piece. The final product ended up being literally perfect! The finish on my wooden box is gorgeous, everything from the shine to the vibrant colors that pop out like desert mirages! I have seen wooden boxes of lesser value go for triple the price. I am proud to say my box is a one of a kind work of art!"
