You've entered the website of Pterylae Designs, thanks for coming!
Here's a little description about my work:
Every piece begins with an acrylic or plexi-glass tile that I cut and bevel the edges.
Thread is then wrapped tightly around the tile one thread at a time in perpendicular or parallel layers and knotted in the back.
Most of the threads I use are cotton, rayon, or metallic embroidery floss, but I will use regular sewing thread, or whatever material seems like a good addition.
The appearance is of a complex woven pattern, although it is all done with a well-planned layering process.
Most of my inspiration will come from color first, balance second, and pattern third.
Once finished, the piece is completely sealed using a painted on thin coat of polycrylic, with special attention to the knots and edges, to ensure sustainability against weather and every day wear and tear. The end bond is strong yet light enough to allow the piece to show the true feel and beauty of the textile. I can personally vouch for many years of use without worry.
You may always contact me directly to set up a custom order if you have a specific color or pattern in mind.
Also if you have specific requests such as buying only a part of a jewelry set (earrings or pendant alone); would like a pendant without a chain; or art piece without a frame, let me know and I can set up that item for you here as a custom order.
Or if you live in the Portland area, come on down to the Portland Saturday Market, where I sell every weekend the Market is open!
Always let me know if there are any questions you have or anything else I can help you with!
Thanks so much for your interest in my work.

5 out of 5 starsI saw this art years ago while exploring Portland and thought about it ever since. It’s as mesmerizing as the first time I saw it. This is going prominently on my wall!

5 out of 5 starsThis piece is so intricate and gorgeous, came matted and framed, and I find myself staring at it, tracing the threads. It draws people in and has a high visual impact in a relatively small piece. I love it!
