About

Wonderful, Handcrafted Wooden Toys, Puzzles and Other objects of Art!

My dad was a toy maker in the 70's, selling his original designs at a store and studio he ran with my mom called T.O.A.D. (Theater of Arts and Dance). Dad did not teach me woodworking...or at least I didn't know that he did...I just watched. Perhaps because he died when I was a young teenager in 1981, or perhaps because I loved making things without knowing it, before I had even tried with my own hands, the memories have a particular intensity, and continue to play a strong role in my work. Eighteen years ago, I made my first toys, starting by reproducing his designs from memory.

Now, I work from my own designs, often informed by my collaborations with other artists, with child and adult clients, and inspired by the world around me. The toys have a timeless quality, connected as they are to the traditions of American Folk artists, and in fact, to a tradition of toymaking that reaches back to the earliest days of civilization. I add my own sense of play, deepened by decades of teaching crafting to children and adults- and observation of what captivates those playing with my work and developing their own.

My love of materials shapes my commitment to the careful use of resources. Scraps from other woodworkers, broken furniture, and tree limbs provide the bulk of my woods. All other materials come from American companies, made by American workers, with American resources. For the toys, I use no paints or stains, only natural wood (Waldorf quality!) I finish them with non-toxic mineral oil - the same material used to finish countertops and cutting boards.

You can find them in classrooms (Waldorf, Montessori, public and daycare) and in a thousand homes, where the children and adults seem to like them equally well. I sell my work through carefully selected galleries and specialty shops, at festivals and craft shows, and out of the trunk of my car and now on Etsy.
