About

What is Traditional Kintsugi?

About 600 years ago, the Japanese tea master Sen Rikyu broke a ceramic tea canister in a fit of rage after a rather disappointing tea ceremony. But it seemed like a tragedy to lose a favorite piece of pottery just because of a flaring temper! So a friend dug the broken bits out of the trash and commissioned an artist to fix the piece. The artist was instructed to repair it in such a way that would make it even more beautiful than it was before it was broken. Hence, the art of kintsugi, or golden joinery, was born.

When I'm asked why my work looks so different when compared to other modern-day kintsugi artists, the answer really boils down to two factors: Materials and Time (aka Patience).

All ceramics that have been repaired by Puro Kintsugi are done so using traditional kintsugi methods and materials. Urushiol is a primary material used in this method of repair. This is the same oily, organic substance that is found in poison ivy and poison oak. Due to its sticky and highly reactive nature, It is a particularly tricky substance to work with. But when it dries, it hardens into a non-reactive, stable lacquer. In fact, if you've ever eaten rice or had a sip of tea out of one of those red lacquered dishes that are often found in Asian restaurants, you have eaten out of a dish covered in urushiol.

The traditional kintsugi method is not without consequences. Each repair takes 4-6 weeks to complete as the lacquer must dry completely in between phases of the process. This is where the art of patience comes into play. So I would say that my ceramics look different because of the time-honored methods used in repairing each piece. I consider traditional kintsugi to be a form of active meditation, and I believe this quality shows in the work. As with life, broken to beautiful is a slow and careful process.

Thank you for visiting Puro Kintsugi.
