For those of you who are unfamiliar with the DIFFERENT TYPES OF WOOL that we offer in our shop - we hope you will find the following information helpful:
Our merino wool is 21.5 microns and the staple length is about 2.75." It is VERY fine, and soft, and smooth - and it has a bit of gloss when felted. Merino can be used for wet felting, nuno felting, and needle felting, although some people find that it is difficult to needle felt with it, because the fiber is very straight and a bit slippery. (I rarely use it for needle felting, but I love it for wet felting - especially nuno felting - because the nice, straight fibers penetrate the silk really nicely!)
Our corriedale wool is 27-30 microns and the staple length is approximately 4.25". It has a defined "crimp" and so it tends to look a little fuzzier than merino. Because of the crimp, corriedale is wonderful for needle felting. The texture makes it easier for the needle to grab, and the crimp helps to hide hole marks made by the needle. I do almost ALL of my needle felting with corriedale.
Our "Maori" batting is a blend of Coopworth and Corriedale wools created for both needlefelting and wet felting. Staple length is roughly 2" and it is prepared carded. Some vegetable matter may be present.
Our textured batting is mostly merino with a bit of mohair. It is nubby, chunky, and full of character - great for needle felting and/or wet felting. Some vegetable matter may be present.
Our natural core fiber batting is a medium/medium fine white/off-white domestic scoured wool which is great for felting. It is perfect for use as core fiber in needle felted projects or for wet felting the ever-popular dryer balls.
WOOL ALSO COMES IN DIFFERENT FORMS:
WOOL SLIVER/TOP: This is wool that comes in long, rope-like strands with all the fibers combed in the same direction. This type of wool can be used for sculptural needle felting, wet felting, and spinning. Lots of folks use it make adorable braided photo props that are used in infant photography. It is also great for making fun and funky dreadlocks (soooo cool!) and for doll hair or animal fur for long-haired critters.
BATTING: When you see the term "batting" in one of our listings, it means that the wool has been carded into sheets or "tufts" with the fibers all mixed up and going in different directions. Batting is poofy and full of air, and because a little of the felting has kinda/sorta already been done for you, it works up much more quickly than roving. Batting is great for beginners, because you don't have to worry about directional fiber lines showing up in your projects - every new tuft you add to your work will blend seamlessly with the layer beneath it. All of our batting can be wet felted AND needle felted - it's awesome!
PRE-FELT SHEETS: Our merino prefelt wool is wool that has been partially needle-felted (by a machine) into thin sheets. It looks just like the less expensive acrylic felt squares that you can buy in a craft store, but trust me, it is NOT the same! Wool prefelt is only partially felted, and so it will still respond to poking and wet felting. You can cut it into shapes to use as wet-felted embellishments on scarves, handbags, clothing, etc., or you can transform it into adorable clothing for your dolls and critters by needle-felting it. If you need just a smidge as an accent color, you can even shred little bits of it with your fingers and then needle felt those bits of fiber wherever you want them to go. Prefelt can also be used as the "canvas" for your 2-dimensional needle felted artwork. Because it is 100% wool, you can felt more wool right onto it!
Please keep in mind that wool from other suppliers may be quite different from the wool that we carry. Fibers vary greatly based on the breed of sheep, where they are raised, what part of the wool is used, how it is processed, etc - and so you will find LOTS of variations. The information above applies to the wool that we sell here at Purple Moose, but it may not hold true for other fibers, sold by other folks, even if the names and descriptions sound similar.
In the end - techniques and projects also differ widely from one felting artist to another - and so we hope you will experiment with all of our products until you find the ones that are exactly perfect for YOU!
