From civil engineer to purse-maker. Who knew?
I am a former civil engineer, now stay-at-home mom of three daughters. I have always had a passion for art, crafting and sewing. I taught myself to sew from a very early age, but once I left home for college I had little time for hobbies. Upon graduating college I got a job, then married and had three children. After having my third child, I left the corporate world to raise my girls full time. I loved being home but missed working. I thought having a creative outlet would help fill that void so I began sewing more in my free time. I started making burp cloths and blankets for my babies, then made a diaper bag for myself and suddenly discovered a passion and talent I didn't know I had - designing bags!
After months of designing and sewing I decided to try turning this hobby into a business, and so, Purse & Pouch was born. I started with craft shows and home parties. At one home party in 2008, a customer approached me and asked if I could make her a very small "purse" that she could put her cell phone in, some cash, and a few credit cards. I spent the next few weeks designing and perfecting what is now a customer favorite. Shortly after the cell phone bag was born a friend told me about Etsy and I opened up my shop. I've been selling on Etsy for 7 years now, and loving every minute of the journey.
If you told me years ago when I was in engineering school that this was what I'd be doing now... I'd probably wouldn't have believed you! But I wouldn't change a thing... in designing bags and selling on Etsy I am able to combine my engineering design skills and my crafting skills to create beautiful purses and pouches that are also functional. I am inspired by beautiful, high quality fabrics. I absolutely love the freedom I have in working from home and doing something creative, on my own time, so that I can always be available for my children and my husband.
