About

Pushing Buttons is a Life Long Passion

I've been pushing buttons for a long time, but I've also been collecting them, too. I use vintage Bakelite, celluloid, leather, bone, glass, shell and plastic buttons paired with industrial metals to create inspired, wearable pieces of loveliness.
Born and raised in Rhode Island, a quirky little state with a long name and an even longer history, I fell in love with all things old: cemeteries, wheat pennies, buildings and people. Listening to the stories of transatlantic immigration from the old women who lived in the nursing home where my mother worked, fueled my imagination as a young child. The old house museums run by the blue- haired old ladies made me want to BE history.
Educated in historic preservation and the public humanities at Brown University, I found an outlet for my desire to collect and become. Buttons are small, personal items and its easy to amass and hold a large collection in small spaces. As I work with each button, I think about its journey into my hands. Each one is so different from the next and tells its own story. Civil War-era bone underwear buttons, Czech glass waistcoat buttons, Art Deco Bakelite buttons, all adorned a person's garments at a point in history. I think about what each button has personally witnessed and I try to incorporate my vision into each distinctive piece I create.
