Exploring landscapes through Letterpress

We began Quail Lane Press began in 2009 with a small tabletop press in the laundry room of our cabin on the west shore of Lake Tahoe. Today, all QLP designs are conceived and designed by me, Michelle, and printed by my husband Charles on our Vandercook letterpress in our workshop in Milwaukie, a lil' town just south of Portland Oregon.

Developed by Johannes Gutenberg way back in the 15th century, the process of letterpress printing consists of several stages: creating a relief plate of an image or composing old type to form an image, stationing the plate on the bed of the press to print in the right place on the paper, inking up the press, and printing. It is a labor of love.

We make all things letterpress and specialize in landscape art. The maps we make remind us of the places that are special in our life or places that we have dreams to go to one day. And we think they elicit the same response in a lot of other people. Our cards and landscape relief prints are a way of connecting with nature (our favorite thing to do!) through art.

F.A.Q.
Do you take commissions of custom maps?
Alas we do not.
Each map is an original piece, researched, drawn, the printed on our press. They take a good deal of time to create and time is something we seem to have less of these days.

Can you change the size or color of the one of the maps you currently have in stock?

In contrast to digitally made prints, letterpress printing involves using custom made relief plates or hand set type (carefully situated on the bed of the press), hand mixing and application of ink, and feeding each piece of paper through the machine one at a time. Changing size is not an easy thing to do as it would require creating a completely new plate. We can however change ink color.

Do you allow the use of your images for other reproductions?

We welcome any shout-outs in your blog or publication and in fact will gladly send you hi res images to use for your feature. But as far as the use of any of our works for reproduction goes, the answer is generally no, as the majority of our pieces are limited editions. But contact me if you have questions. All of our work is protected by U.S. copyright laws.

The following items can't be returned or exchanged
Because of the nature of these items, unless they arrive damaged or defective, I can't accept returns for:
  • Custom or personalized orders
  • Perishable products (like food or flowers)
  • Digital downloads
  • Intimate items (for health/hygiene reasons)
Returns and exchange details
My aim is to have each customer be happy with their order.
Here are some of our shop polices on the subject of returns or problems with your order.

RETURNS: Refunds will be issued if orders is sent back in original packaging within 20 days of receipt of order (or delivery date). No returns are accepted of "SALE" items. We will process your return within 2 weeks of receipt and apply a credit to your original payment method. You’ll receive an email from us when this is complete. A credit will appear on your next statement, depending on the issuing bank and billing cycle. We do *not* refund shipping charges. If you live abroad and are willing to pay to ship your order back to us, we will issue a refund (not including the original shipping). Also if you would rather make an exchange just let us know!

PRODUCT DAMAGED: We package each print with the utmost care however sometimes they encounter some nasty postal machines on their way to you. If your artwork or cards arrive in anyway bent or damaged please contact me and we will send out a replacement.

US ORDERS NEVER RECEIVED or UN-DELIVERABLE DUE TO SHIPPING ADDRESS PROVIDED ON ETSY: Refunds or replacements will *not* be issued for merchandise that has been marked "delivered" to your requested address according to the USPS tracking number, but you never received it. We are not responsible for your mail after delivery, and will not provide a replacement at our expense or a refund for your missing goods. You can request a signature confirmation at delivery in the US for an additional $3.00 USD. Also, partial refunds (i.e. minus original shipping) are issued when an order is returned to us because a delivery attempt was made and a notice was left, but the buyer did not pick up the package or arrange a re-delivery for whatever reason, or an incorrect address was provided by the buyer on Etsy. If your order gets returned to us by the USPS, we will issue a partial refund, and if you still want the order, you can place a 'new' order with a valid shipping address. Please, double-check that your Etsy shipping address is correct, since that is the address we use for shipping your order.

INTERNATIONAL ORDERS NEVER RECEIVED: Unless you purchase the more costly international priority mail all international orders are shipped using "First Class International USPS mail" that only provides tracking up until it leaves the US border. Tracking is only available outside of the US in a few countries, including Great Britain and Canada. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN INTERNATIONAL ORDERS. We will verify shipment and provide shipping confirmation here in the states only. That said we have experienced very few instances of international orders going missing.

I accept payments made via direct checkout. Items ship when payments are made in full.
Shipping
Each order ships between 2 and 4 business days from time of purchase. If you need to rush an order or if your order is a gift and you would like special handling on it convo me or don't forget to leave me a note during purchase.

Tracking info for international orders is unavailable after the package leaves the United States-except in Canada and in some places in the UK. In regard to international sales the buyer is responsible for any customs duties or taxes that may be incurred. For items that require customs forms to be filled out, the item will be declared as merchandise, and its value listed.

We are located in the Portland Oregon Metro area so if you would like to set up local pickup and save on shipping please make a note of that when placing your order. We also sell our prints in many retail locations so if you would like to know where to purchase locally, drop us a line.
