Passion for Quilting
Treese and Betty, the two "quilt nuts" of Quiltnutz are passionate about fabric and quilting. We are a daughter and mother team, and have been quilting together for the last 23 years, mostly just for fun. A while back we decided to share our passion with others, besides family and friends. Our fabric collecting/stash building has taken over several rooms and we decided to reduce--we really need the room. Treese's husband got his living room back but lost the family room--it's now a studio!
While we try not to take ourselves too seriously, we are constantly working on new ideas and color options for our quilts. Over the last couple of years the traditional has really shifted to modern twists. Plus we have expanded into mixed media pieces which allows us to use up a lot of the leftover quilting scraps.
We use original designs and all of our items are hand made. Color and texture are important components in the pieces and we experiment with new fabric lines all the time.. And, oh yes, we recycle, upcycle and repurpose whenever we can--this is also known a stash reduction! If it doesn't work for one project, it may be terrific in another.
Three years ago, Treese quit her day job and decided to add a bigger long arm quilting machine to the studio. As we all know, the UFO's (unfinished objects) keep stacking up, and need to be completed, but who has the time? The bigger machine is helping us both get the quilts and art pieces finished faster! Treese has over eleven years of long arm experience and 30+ years quilting and sewing experience with a keen eye for design that will enhances the finished tops. She really enjoys free-hand quilting, but also has a computerized machine--so you get the best of both worlds.
Betty started quilting around 20 years ago (she's been sewing since she was a little kid). She also paints and many of her paintings end up in the cards and quilts. She likes to use Treese's photos as a basis for her paintings, and then Treese will transfer that to fabric to create an art quilt or a card. It definitely is a collaboration. Most of what you find on in the shop has been made jointly by the two of us.
We also offer custom order on all items along with memory and T-shirt quilts as options. Many of our custom quilts have pieces of clothing, ribbon, lace and photos of loved ones that are used to create a one-of-a-kind heirloom gifts. We have made memory quilts for weddings and engagements, birthdays, baby gifts and quilts for college bound kids. You'll find many of the finished quilts that we have made on the gallery page on our website.
Let us know if you have questions or want to know more about how we make these originals. We love to hear from the visitors to our shop.
Owner, Maker, Designer, Photographer
I started quilting around 1977 when I was given a box of unfinished quilt pieces that belonged to my grandmother. I didn't know much about quilts, but jumped right in and put my sewing skills to work. I graduated to baby quilts for gifts and then ended up teaching quilting classes at a community college a few years later. This year I decided to pursue my passion and quit the day job! I do not miss corporate America! My days are filled with quilting, designing, photography and other creative pursuits. There are so many ideas stuffed in my head that I'm sure I will never be bored. Plus, I now have time to spend with my family that doesn't have to revolve around a vacation approval form!!! Life is good.
Maker, Designer, Quilter & Watercolor Artist
Betty is an accountant by day, and quilter/artist the rest of time. She started quilting when her arthritis didn't allow her to play golf, tennis or bowl anymore. As it turned out, Treese was a willing quilting buddy, so they started taking classes, finding quilt shops and attending quilt shows. Over the years, Betty has been building her fabric stash--she said she was investing for her retirement--and has filled two rooms with amazing stuff. Currently she is working on contemporary versions of classic blocks in lime green and black. Stayed tuned for more!
